There is no such thing as abortion on demand in this country, therefore it is by definition not a personal choice. It has to be a medical necessity.

Not to get into a debate about abortion but if a woman says to her doctor she wants an abortion she will get one whatever her reason. As near on demand as is possible without actually calling it that.

Most comparable, less controversial, example I can think of is wisdom teeth extraction. It may be possible to have wisdom teeth extracted in a dentist chair under local, it may require a hospital procedure under a GA.

The actual decision of "if" and "how" the procedure is performed is a medical decision between patient and medical expert. It is not a decision that an employer can expect to influence. Recovery time will also be decided by medical profession, who will provide a sick note accordingly.

Both would be elective in the sense that the timing would be chosen rather than emergency.

Now we have taken the emotion out of the situation, how should an employer react?

Extraction in dentist chair, dentist would probably suggest taking it easy for rest of the day. In hospital, patients normally advised not to drive/ operate machinery/ sign documents for 24 hours. In either case possibly off sick the following day.

In my work this would count as pregnancy related whether it was through choice or through necessity.

Best thing to do would be to check the employers own policy rather than guessing on here.

I've recently had elective surgery - to correct issues with previous eye surgery.

was advised that for the first week I could self certify and after this would require a doctors note as per 'usual' regulations. As with company policy I had my Bradford factor adjusted and received full pay - but the full pay thing is obviously company specific...

Human resources stated this would be fine - my manager fore-saw issues so I called direct and spoke with him.

HR's stance was I had decided / had been advised by a Dr i was unfit for work for the first week - after that as law states for everywhere i would have to get Dr's note. For the company I work with they would have allowed me to have an elective breast enhancement and be off for six weeks - if for weeks 2 - 6 I had a written letter from Dr explaining I was unfit for work....

You have no specific need to explain the ins and outs detail wise - my manager if you mention 'women's troubles - literally runs a mile with his fingers in his ears singing la la la... (He's such a grown up). So now when he asks I tell him I'm happy to share but he'll never un-hear what I reply...

    Hope you are well.
