Barclaycard application stopped (already have an account).

in Credit cards
I just applied for a credit card from barclaycard, or tried to.
I'm doing this to use for fuel and other small purchases as I've been slowly but surely improving my credit over the past 12 months and it's heading in the right direction.
I got to the end of the application and despite not having or ever having a credit card or even a bank card from them it came back at the end advising that they couldn't continue the application as I already have a product with them?
I'll obviously ring them tomorrow to verify this but can anyone shed any light on why this might be or are the alarm bells ringing in my head possible, FRAUD?
Thanks

Ever had an EGG card which they took over?0
-
Nope never had one of those either. I've also got noddle and clears core which updated recently and they don't show me as having a credit card with Barclays.0

curious. they certainly have a 'no second account' policy nowadays, so it will be interesting to find out what it is that is causing the problem for you. as you say, call them & find out what's happening. good luck.0

Yeah it's a strange one. I'll call tomorrow and update.
Thanks0 -
So I have called barclaycard to clear this up and they told me I do have an account with them which is now closed.
It was closed in January 2008 and it was for a barclaycard which was sent to debt collectors and they have it recorded as being settled now and that's why they can't offer me one now, I've just been made to feel very small on the phone regarding an debt I cleared 8 ago and she's said because of it, Barclays won't allow me to be their customer again. That seems ridiculous to me as I don't believe this is stated on applications anywhere when they take all your details to run a credit check. That debt was paid when I was 21 and I'm 30 this year but according to the advisor this is a policy they have at Barclays.0 -
thank you for coming back to let us know..
i suppose they are entitled to choose who to provide services for, and having to go to debt collectors seems to have blotted your book with them.
don't worry about it though, just use alternative banks and card providers.
perhaps open a savings account, or current account (if you can), with Barclays and build up some good history with them, if you really want to bank/borrow with them?0 -
I just went with them because I know the name obviously and also it came up on my credit file as being 90% chance of approval.
Don't need to borrow any money as I've cleared all debt and just have my current account with Santander and a mobile contract on EE. MY CREDIT FILE just suggested a negative factor was the fact I didn't have a credit card.
I want to improve my history to show future lenders I am responsible with money so when it comes to mortgages etc I'll be looked at more favourably.
I understand Barclays can choose who they take on but 8 years down the line especially at such a young age it seems a bit much to refuse applications based on that. I would at least expect them to take your details and advise you that they can't offer it for the said reasons but it actually allowed a credit check to go ahead.0 -
On a side note they Did say that they were reviewing that policy and to reapply in a few months time.0
-
fair enough. yes, getting a credit card for your day-to-day spending, cleared in full by direct debit, would seem like a good idea to me.0

If I'd borrowed £100 from you 8 years ago and only paid £10 or £20 back, would you be keen to lend to me again?
I agree re credit checks but one shouldn't make much difference.0
