Have you tried seeing if any MOT places will come and collect it from you? Even if they are a few quid more than the cheapest garage it would probably be cheaper overall.0

You'll probably find many insurers who, while not generally specialising in one day policies, will allow you to buy a years policy and then cancel it in the cooling off period for a nominal admin fee.
Which may be £25 or more with a pro rata refund for unused period of the policy, and no cheaper than you've already found, but worth considering as a solution if you'll do the MOT and test drives within a short space of time and then not need it.0
