1 day car insurance policy

I need to take out a 1 days car insurance policy so I can take my partners car for an m.o.t Can anyone recommend companies that do 1 day policies. The cheapest doing a joint drivers policy is around £20.

(Selling the car later this month- so might have to duplicate the purchase to do a test drive for buyer, but possibly cheaper than taking out a months policy that is around £80)

thanks

  • Is the car insured to your partner?

Do you own your own car that is insured?

You may find that you have the ability to drive other cars that are insured with their own policy. Albeit 3rd party only, but this will be enough to get you to the MOT station and back.

Or if the car is insured by your girlfriend it might cost less to have to added to the insurance.

Short term insurance policies can be expensive and may not be much cheaper than your £80 quote for 1 months insurance.

My partner owns the car, and has no insurance on it. Yes I have insurance on my own car.

I guess the 3rd party option is doable.. I think I got that down to £16.

I had a look for 1 day insurance for my car on my details and it came out about £30. Unless you stick your details in there is no way of knowing what price you will get. I used this site If you are looking to sell the car later this month the £80 might be a more cost effective way if doing it, given that you may not sell the car to the first customer and you may need to do more that one test drive with prospective buyers.

    Is your insurance fully comp?

As already stated many/most fully comp insurance policies allow you to drive another car with 3rd party cover which you might decide is perfectly fine for a short trip to/from an MOT station. If true then this would, of course, cost you noting extra.

All of the comprehensive policies I have had for as long as I can remember have this 'benefit' and I have used many different providers.

    EDIT: Just spotted this bit
My partner owns the car, and has no insurance on it.
Ignore my advice as the car in question has to be insured on a policy for the feature I describe above to be valid.

Have you asked your insurer how much it'd cost to add it to your own policy temporarily?

Correction, that only applies to SOME policies. I suspect the cheap ones like Admiral.

ND - Do you know of any providers offer this as I would be VERY interested in taking them up as I am currently in the fortunate position of owning two cars and I would only need to insure one of them. (I'm not sure which one I am keeping yet!!)

You'd need to be careful that they don't exclude cars that you own, too. And you're likely to get pulled by any ANPR camera/car you pass on the roads.

No it will usually exclude cars you own and may even exclude cars at your address or family cars.

If the car is not insured all the time it needs to be SORNd and the tax will expire.
A car must be continuously insured or SORNd. Failure to do that you will get a nice little bill from the DVLA.

Many do, eg Halifax, but your wheeze won't work as all exclude DOC cover on cars you own!
