http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/35345731/whatsapp-is-now-free-and-there-still-wont-be-adverts:
WhatsApp is now free to use.

For the last few years, you've had to pay a subscription after 12 months. But the company says that fee is being scrapped immediately.

At the moment, it costs around 69p-a-year. But if you've just paid it, you won't get your money back.

I stopped using Whatsapp many years ago.

I prefer Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger, which will both sync across phones, tablets and PCs.

Another app that you give agreement for them to collect data on you and share it.

Why would facebook not want it?

Seen the news about the facebook browser, basically not letting you log out of facebook. they want ALL your info... Selling your data is big money.

It gets sold to reputable companies and then filters down the chain to the seedy side of spammers.
