just like the win 8.1 setup , its the machine that is registered , I have found from experience (about 50 upgrade/reinstalls so far) that a clean new install of win 10 makes the machine run smoother. with this in mind I would suggest backing up any data on the nearly new machine , run the update and allow the machine to be registered (automatic) then to consider a clean new install.

however , do your upgrade first and return if you wish to do this , and people can talk you thru it

I would do a full system backup first (with Macrium Reflect Free or similar) before doing any upgrading.

In theory you have 30 days to roll back from Windows 10 upgrade but
    (a) it doesn't always work and
    (b) it's only 30 days, whereas a Backup would let you rollback for as long as you have the backup.

We have upgraded our laptop from 7 to 10. It is like a new machine again and is flying. Had it about 8 weeks now and based on this so far would recommend 10.

Please ask the people who say this "why do you think that 8.1 is better than 10?" so that we can explain to them why they are wrong.

Just because you don't know the operating systems that well doesn't mean people sticking with Windows 8.1 are wrong - it's much less intrusive than Windows 10 (no mucking about with the registry to access basic settings like Windows update in Win 8.1 or disable MS data harvesting) and the Windows 10 interface is a lot of steps backwards for touch and hybrid devices. Furthermore there's few advantages in upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10, it's fundamentally the same operating system simply rebranded due to the poor image Windows 8 incorrectly received - most of the Windows 10 features people boast about were implemented in Windows 8 or 8.1 particularly the speed improvements.

I would downgrade to Windows 7 - a far superior OS than Win 8/8.1 or 10
