Money Moral Dilemma: Should I ask the guest to replace my broken furniture?

  • I think it's a bit more complicated than this. If you accepted new people into your house, did you know that some of the furniture was unsuitable for sitting on, and did you warn them (or was it obvious)? If you allowed them to sit on unsuitable furniture that was then irreparably damaged when they sat on it, what happened - did it collapse? Were they hurt? If they weren't warned you're probably lucky you haven't been sued. If you warned them and they ignored it then of course you should expect them to pay (with insurance as a last resort). In any case you may need to adjust your social contact lists.
  • The question posed doesn't say if the person responsible admitted to what had happened or even apologised, so maybe they weren't aware that they'd broken something.

When you have social gatherings in your home people do tend to sit all over the place - so this can easily happen.

Personally I'd just put it down to experience and move on.
