i should also mention that i graduated in summer 2002, which was a very bad year for graduate recruitment after 9/11. some people were offered training contracts which were then withdrawn..... which may have contributed to the number of people taking years out. people did start thinking early, and do all the graduate fairs and the law specific ones - but it makes sense that firms want to hire people who really want do it, rather than people who only decide after graduation that it seems like an ok thing to do.
