I thought a 39 yr old motorbike that had done 40.000 miles with a REBUILT value of £500 and had come from Europe was exempt from VAT

If you can prove that VAT has been paid in an EU member country - by, for instance, showing that it's been on German plates - then no VAT is due.
But they won't just take your word for it.0 -
alas there is no german doccies , but how else would it have left a dealership without VAT being paid?Save a Rachael

So you don't have any documentation at all for anything prior to the import to the UK?pappa_golf wrote: »no presumably in Germany , there is a early VIN type plate on the bike , with writing in german , the dating officer at the VJCC states that the bike was supplied to the " north European" area , ie not an import from japan or USA , I was told not vat on this
Problem is that Germany still doesn't have a single national vehicle registry - it's all done regionally. If you don't know which region it was registered in, you can't easily ask if that VIN was ever registered there. And there's a LOT of 'em...

Which points you to Kawasaki Germany, I think, as your best bet.0 -
Kawasaki Germany (now Netherlands) pointed me to Kawasaki Uk , they have full European records , HOWEVER they did not include bike registed before VIN numbers existed , at which point I was pointed to the VJCC who could assist with a dating thing
