The Cambridge Aldi's been there years, I think it was the mid-90s and I think (from memory) that used to be a small tyre depot, behind the garage.
Yes, I think I first started using it in the late 90s.
It was never really high profile and was just a "little shop" of no significance at the time. I guess they don't find the need to put a proper shop in the town. They know what they're looking for and if they wanted to do it they'd have found a way ... and they haven't.
I believe they've been looking for an additional site for several years, but without success.

I was very disappointed with an Aldi trip on Friday afternoon. The meat section, in particular, was missing many of the better quality cuts and when I asked if they were re-stocking later that day, the assistant told me they had sold out and wouldn't re-stock till Saturday.

I hope Aldi isn't becoming a victim of its own success.

For my small amount of shopping each week, it is hardly worth travelling to Ely or Chatteris. Occassionally, I'll pop into the local store of my parents when I'm back down south. That's quite a spacious store in an out of town retail park. Complete contrast to the Cambridge store!

Depending which side of Cambridge you live, I find the Bury or Brandon stores to be much better. But then I'm nearer those stores than Cambridge/Ely. It's amazing the variation amongst stores.

You could be right actually. Did it used to be an ATS tyre depot or is that further down the road?

I know there's also an Iceland on the site now but neither were there when I lived in Cambridge in the 80s.

There's a prime site they could use in Newmarket, which is crying out for an Aldi store. Morrisons (I can't believe autocorrect wanted me to type Morribobs  ) had planning permission but have since foreclosed on the site.

    Yes, that's right.

I can't believe people were camping out there for the re-opening :rotfl:

I was long gone by the 90s, I used to live in digs on Histon Rd whilst studying at the Vet School

Aldi refurbs don't usually change very much. The main thing seems to be to update the Fruit & Veg displays.

Lidl refurbs usually involve introducing a mini In-store Bakery.

Not necessary. I have a Lidl about 8 miles away from me.

Been in there just recently and they have put in upright freezers along one wall and new tills. Already had the bakery.

Just wish they would update the one nearest me, it's calling out for a massive refurbish. But I don't think they will do it as this is one of their early shops and they don't own the site.

I'm sure the Lidl cheese thins have gotten cheesier lately.

I bought them because they were nice rather than being better than McVites, now they are a real rival :D

  • Has anyone tried the super-strength squash from Aldi yet? I didn't see the price, but the bottles are 48ml (so are allowed in the stupid liquid bag to take on a plane) and make 20 servings, apparently.
