And Transport For London - tube and buses. And lots and lots of other traders, e.g. my local off licences, news agents, the Coop, the farm shop, the butchers all take contactless............the list is almost endless.

Yes. Unfortunately their card machines ask for my PIN about 50% of the time. I appreciate they will from time to time, but they seems to do it more often than they should.

I don't live in a big city, but there's lots of contacless opportunities around me. The local Tesco Superstore is the biggest exception.

One tip is to look out for retailers advertising Apple Pay. They seem to make more fuss about that then bog standard contactless.

I use mine in Costa Coffee and a cafe in Russell Square where I often have lunch on work days. Must check my account to see if I have a reward today.

Cash is expensive. Banks will be driving cashless society as much as the big companies. A few costs involved with cash I can think of off the top of my head:

Logistics of moving cash and associated costs (securicor etc)
Tellers to count the cash when it arrives
    Cost of ATM
Time taken to refill / repair / count ATM
    Insurance for the cash cash
Cost of installation / upkeep of safe
Physical security measures and assoicated upkeep
    Cost of cashiers
Cost of larger premises (a bank in a cashless society can just be portacabin sized for the three staff needed to run it)

If I were a commercial enterprise like a bank, I would rather pay a very small amount per transaction than the costs above. However when htey have the monopoly whats to say that they wont increase the fees sky high.

For those who like to wear tinfoil hats, its so the government can see every thing we spend

More likely so that the bank can direct their marketing campaigns more specifically/appropriately and thus make their advertising budget more rewarding and cost effecient.:money:

In my small town Tesco Express only the card machines on the tobacco/quick service counter do cashless and the scanners on this counter can also scan barcodes on a phone screen - great for your Clubcard if you have it on your phone.

I don't normally go to Tesco so I don't know if it's all tills in there, but the self-service tills in my local Tesco Metro can do contactless. It maybe the case that they'll (I would if I was them) install them on self service tills to encourage those of us with smaller loads to use those instead of manned tills, and leave the old tech on the manned tills because it saves paying to upgrade all of them when if we have a big trolley full we can't use contactless anyway. EDIT- Would also explain not having it in the fuel, a significant chunk of transactions will be for above the limit.

EDIT (2): It's generally all fast food type place, bars, or anywhere else that would previously have had a lot of smaller transactions taking place and where speed of payment is more critical. Supermarkets you don't mind your staff having to wait 30 seconds extra for payment on 1 transaction every 5 minutes, a bar where there's 3 or 4 people all using 1 or 2 tills wants 8 or 9 transactions to go through in the same time, 30 seconds extra is a big saving. A casino (either Genting or Gala) I was in after work one night on a trip away with work had a bar that was cash or contactless only.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Timpsons is fully contactless, that shocked me getting a key cut, asked for card payment and he took my card out my hand and swiped machine behind him and gave a receipt... full roll out, bar the training - a customer swipes, not the staff - for security reasons.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
