Please advice needed x

Hi Lovelies

I really need your help.

I began using Sky 2 years ago, first year I got a decent deal and I thought that deal would be the same each year until I decided to cancel.

Rarely do I use the Sky for movies etc its only in the living room for when the grand~babies come over and want to watch a Disney show or a kids day time show.

The first year I was paying £34 a month. Now I did not realise until a few days ago that figure doubled, and I am not so great with technology but when my son checked my bank account for me online as I noticed my wages had not gone into my bank, that we noticed that Sky had taken £74 from my account. On further searching my bank account they have taken £74 since June 2015.

When we rang Sky and asked them about this they said a letter had been sent out in May, this letter was never received I had no idea they would double my fee and take that money from my account.

My sister recommended I talk on here to yourselves to ask for your advice.

Am I entitled to ask for a refund because they could tell the telephone and also the television never gets used, I use my mobile phone for phone calls. And the Sky box is beyond a light user its a very rare user.

I cannot afford £74 each month, I thought once my mortgage was paid up in April 2015 that I would be better off and couldn't understand why i never was.

I plan to make a call to Sky, I am going to ask for a refund and I am also going to ask for the TV package to be cancelled, I only want broadband and telephone line. No need for anything else, but I am asking here if you know my rights?

Please help,

I use a portable television in my kitchen with a digital box, broadband is needed, telephone line also, but the basics, but the sky is not needed on the TV.

I don't know your rights in this situation, you should have kept on top of your account and might have seen the £74 going out of your account.

If you wanted a cheaper option for to theres the freeview option from sky or there's Now TV which might have a Disney channel.

Your deal was only for a fixed time, like all introductory offers, after that time was up it reverted to the standard price. Just because you don't use it, it doesn't mean they will offer you a refund. Many people never use their landline for calls, but it is in regular use if you use broadband.

My advice it cancel the TV if you don't use it, and resolve to keep a much closer eye on your finances in the future.
  • Thank you for the quick replies.

Yes I know how stupid I have been, this technology is so hard to keep up with and my bank account, money goes in and out and yes I really need to get a grip with knowing every penny going out.

It is made quite clear that offers are for 12 months or less, but I don't recall being given notification of the end dates (They aren't obliged to inform you). However, I made a note of dates on the letters sent out at take-up of the offers.

I don't think Sky have any way of knowing whether you watched the tv or how much you used the phone (only outgoing calls are listed on your bill), so they can't be held responsible for the fact that you ordered the services and didn't use them.

Keeping Sky just for the occasional grandchildren's visit and otherwise rarely watching is a large waste of money, so the above suggested services or investing in some dvds are possible alternatives.

Sky don't care whether you use the service(s) they provide. You pay for the ability to use them. Whether you do or not matters not one jot and was (is) entirely up to you.

I've had "deals" from Sky TV for the last two years -they sent me an email in advance of the end of the deal period both times, pointing out the increased sub. from xx date. It acted as a trigger to cancel for a date just after this date ....and then wait for the deals via email or phone !!

If you can't work out how to access your online bank or Sky account easily, then revert to paper billing. You can't afford not to notice a doubling of your bill for 7 months.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
