Hi norton is stopping it...normally you can only have 1 anti-virus working at 1 time...go to add/remove and click on remove...then go to start...search...all folders/files...type in norton and it will pick up everything that is left over...delete the lot...this should then be the last of it...then run avg...hth's...I know you can get a removal tool...try...
see if you can get it there...:D

I had exactly the same problem on my desktop, and doing what Computerwoman suggests you do worked for me! Norton is notorious for being difficult to get rid of. Majorgeeks is a good website with loads of free software, and I've downloaded lots from them with no probs at all. AVG picked up five trojans that Norton hadn't detected on the first scan, and I've used it for 18 months now and kept everything out.
  • ive removed all from add/remove programs and done a search as computerwoman said and its telling me that nothing exists for norton .but its still telling me that im still been protected by norton in my security should i try installing avg again because its now disapeared. then do another scan before downloading tool.

I would try it first but if it doesn't work then download the removal tool as said by the guy who likes to call people d!ckhead...

Dont listen to computerwoman, she should actually know by now as its been posted time and time again over the years and how she missed is absolutley beyond me.

What you should do is download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

Perhaps not the best way to be 'gentle with me as I'm new to all this?'
  • well ive done what computerwoman said, and the !!!!!!!! man.ive got rid of norton and symantec but when i restarted my computer i still got an avgee.exe-application error telling me that it failed to inialize properly windows couldn't find a solution then avg control centre stopped working. but its showing that i am protected by avg in my security, but now i cant run a scan manually.

you dont say if you are using vista. Ive had the same problem with a new laptop. If vista then you have to make sure all updates are on BEFORE installing avg.hope this helps someone.

You don't have to make sure all updates are on before you install it to Vista. Mine installed first time with AVG that wasn't upto to date. How can you get updates for something that you have'nt got installed on your PC in the first place. The problem is Norton it Leaves trace every where. Download the removal tool and run it and things should be fine.
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)

I had system hungry norton on my new PC as well, what I did was remove all norton software before I did a single thing, restarted the PC, then checked prog files and c drive for all norton traces.

Then I checked registry, not essential but helpful (but do not tamper if you have no experience with registry meddling)

The install AVG clean with no other Anti-Virus on system, all should be fine.

In your case you may be best removing all Anti Virus Software including AVG and installing it from scratch.
