    Forget this advice. You can't reject a car because it doesn't have a spare key.

    If they'd promised you one or said it came with one, fair enough.

    From section 22 of Consumer rights Act 2015

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/contents/enacted
    9 Goods to be of satisfactory quality

    (1)Every contract to supply goods is to be treated as including a term that the quality of the goods is satisfactory.

    (2)The quality of goods is satisfactory if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, taking account of—

    (a)any description of the goods,

    (b)the price or other consideration for the goods (if relevant), and

    (c)all the other relevant circumstances (see subsection (5)).

    (3)The quality of goods includes their state and condition; and the following aspects (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

    (a)fitness for all the purposes for which goods of that kind are usually supplied;

    (b)appearance and finish;

    (c)freedom from minor defects;

    (d)safety;

    (e)durability.

    Unless a reasonable person would consider a built in satnav that doesn't work, and no spare key satisfactory I suggest that it does apply.

    (Maybe I'm not a reasonable person, but I'd expect a 6 month old main dealer car to be "as new" apart from the odd stone chip and a bit less tread on the tyres, unless it is ex-fleet with 30,000 on the clock, but I'd have paid a price that reflected this......;))

    There was a similar post a few months ago when a van was purchased and the original owner was the Police. Such pool vehicles would only have one key for the user and a second held by the garage where servicing was carried out.

    Yours chances of getting a second key in such circumstances are nil.

    Most surprising that your friend didn't check the SatNav

    Given that we don't know the circumstances, how the car was described e.g. "Cheap old kn#cker to clear" might be a hint :D or whether the price was well below comparable vehicles,

    there is still a difference in buying an old van off the yard of a fleet disposal dealer, and a private car 6 months old from the marque dealer.

    You would expect a fleet van to have been ragged mercilessly, crashed into loads of stuff, had 3 tonnes of scrap rolling around in the back etc.

    You would reasonably expect a 6 month old dealer supplied car to be of a much higher standard, unless it was suspiciously cheap.

    The cost to the dealer of a spare key is probably £20-£30 the £200 includes their labour programming it to the car, which actually takes a couple of minutes. The memory card is likely below half what they say, so they could easily suck up the costs out of their profit, or in the worst case do a "special deal" for a great deal less than full retail to keep the customer sweet.

    So something is very wrong here, which is why I suggested rejection on the facts I do have.

    I know the neighbour across the road has a quasqai no satnav chip.
    In my VW there is an SD card for the sat nav, but you cannot simply plug that card into another similar model for the nav to work, the actual SD card is assigned to that vehicle.

    I've a Qashqai and that uses an SD card, but the card isn't keyed to the car as you can easily get updated cards.

    The Nissan cards are assigned to a type of vehicle (satnav type actually), not a specific car. So any one for the model of qausqai satnav off ebay will work.
    They are also copy protected, so you can't just borrow one and make your own (unless you know how to defeat the protection).

    If I had bought the car, then I'd just get it sorted myself, but I'd have expected a £500 reduction in the price to cover the costs and the trouble (then done it for less). I wouldn't have accepted it at full price without 2 keys, and I would most certainly expect the factory fitted satnav to be working.

    Hi everyone who answered thanks so much there's some really helpful advice there. I'm going to inform him of all of your idea and ask him what he wants to do. I need to ask him if he has a copy of the advert etc.

    He just brought down and invoice and it seems like he brought the car for his daughter who then noticed that didn't have the two keys and the code for the satnav and that's when he went there and they said it would be extra so they gave him a print out of all the costs that it would be.

    caprikid1 - I believe it's 2010 just from the number plate so I see what you are saying. At first I thought it was a bit newer.

    shaun from Africa- I'm not sure if there ever was a second key I'm guessing it has probably been lost and this is what the invoice if for. What the replacement key etc would cost. I see what you mean and I'm trying to find the original advert to see what it says.

    TurntoGrey- I didn't know that it's a iQ iQ2 3dr 1.0 VVT-i multidrive. That's what I can see from the invoice no idea what it means. I'll tell him that about the sat nav also.

    Ckhalvashi- I see what you mean also and I think that they just assumed it would have those bits but yes they probably should have checked.

    façade- yeah I could imagine they are in a bag there somewhere also. I think the first thing to do it go in and be nice and ask them to have a quick look and it might turn up. I'll also explain to him about what he can do about that. Yeah I though the satnav would surely have to work unless an advert specifically said for extra we can programme this in for you and order something.

    bearcat16- thanks so much for taking the time to get the link. I know firsthand how expensive those darn keys can be when I was a student I lost it twice- exactly a year apart and I'd parked in the same place - all due to wanting to go out last min for Halloween! couldn't believe how much it cost £180 and that's without being towed and then to do the same thing again what an idiot I was!! Very good idea about the service also : )

    burlington6- think we're going to try the nice please see if you can find it and if not please give us some money off a service/free route.

    Robin9- That makes total sense as only one person would be allowed to be responsible for that van at a time I guess.

    Sorry about the info being a bit sketchy that was all I hand at the time.

    Thanks again for all your help it's been very useful. : )

    Now we know it is 5 years old, expectations are a bit different.

    Tough luck on the key, as although I wouldn't buy a car with 1 key, I'd have specifically asked about keys before purchase.

    I'd still expect the satnav to work though, certainly if the salesman had said "It has satnav" or the advert mentioned it at all. If the advert didn't mention satnav, it would have set alarm bells ringing, as the adverts normally have a huge list of stuff that came as standard e.g. "PAS, A/C, C/L..." as if they are a bonus.

    So you can't reasonably return it

    I bought a 3 year old Renault from a dealer last year. It did not have a card or remote for the sat nav. We noticed this immediately and the dealer ordered a new remote and card, which he paid for and was delivered directly to my house. He bought it from eBay, it works fine, there was never any question of my paying for it.

    I guess the dealer took the cost of this into account when negotiating the purchase price of the car with me. If I were your friend, I would ask the dealer to be sorting out whatever is necessary to make sure that the sat nav works. It is an important function for most car buyers and I think it would be reasonable to expect it to be working or else highlighted as defective.
