Car sold with only one key and no satnav chip

Hi all

I'm posting for some advice on behalf of a friend.

He's recently purchase a car from a local Toyota dealer. It's a used Toyota and his issue is that the only supplied one key not the two and they didn't give the satnav chip/sd something or other ( no idea what this is tbh)
They said he's need to cough up another £500 to get these things.

He said he got into a bit of an argument with them as they are meant to come with the car and they told him he needs to write a letter to complain but there's nothing they can do.

I'm happy to go with him to the local Toyota dealer tomorrow so wondered if anyone had any advice on what to say or what his rights are in regards to this?

I'm sure that two keys are meant to be supplied I've always had two keys with all my cars but I have no idea about this satnav thing but he seems adamant it was meant to be included.

Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Depends if it's a model supplied with more than one key and if it was advertised as having sat nav.
These things could have been checked before completing the deal.

The sale is nothing to do with me. He's seems to think that it was meant to be with it so I'll double check with him what the terms were.

Thanks for the feedback so there's no rules regarding cars should be sold with both keys? Would this be something they'd have to admit prior to the sale or would the buyer have to specifically ask if there were two keys?

6 month old car, I think its reasonable to expect and would expect a main dealer to resolve.

10 years old I would expect to check what was working etc.
  • If one of the advertised features of the car was a sat-nav and it needs the chip (probably a memory card of some sort) to work, then it should be included in the selling price.
The 2nd key is a different matter. Provided that no mention was made on the advert of the number of keys being supplied, then legally the retailer isn't doing anything wrong.

However, saying that, if there is a 2nd key already in existence I would wonder why they would want to keep it once they have sold the car.
As it would be worthless to them (unless of course they wanted to use it for nefarious purposes), it might be worth your friend finding out from a Toyota franchise how much a replacement would cost then offer the garage a reasonable amount in cash for the key.

A Toyota "should" have 3 keys as standard, two black keys and a grey key. At least the 3 Toyotas I previously owned did. What car and what year ? Not an ex motability car is it by any chance ? These can appear sometimes with just one key for some reason.
As for the sat nav, my last two Toyotas had double function buttons for the computer, however, the model variant did not have sat nav but it looked like it on the dash because of these double function buttons.
Started my job at the bottom and liked it

The car can't be sold as seen (as it's from a dealer), however only having one key is part of life for some cars when buying used.

I bought a Focus with only one key as the seller didn't know where the other one was/how many it had when he bought it. Cost £40 for a second remote key and single non-remote key including cutting, for keys sourced online and programmed myself, although how easy this is to do on a Toyota I don't know.

Sat nav I have no idea, although should your OH not have checked that it worked and was chipped before buying the car in the first place?

Exercise your right to reject under sect 22 of the CRA 2015, as the goods are not of satisfactory quality (sect 9)- a reasonable person would expect a spare key, and the satnav to work in a 6 month old car that they payed full market price for. I would say a non working satnav is a defect.
The goods are not fit for purpose (sect 10) , the satnav doesn't work, so you can never leave your street without getting lost.

The spare keys and memory card for the satnav are likely in a bag with the handbook somewhere at the dealers. (Some built in satnavs have a memory card that fits from the front, and can be popped out and stolen whilst on display at a dealer, so they remove them.)
However, as they have been less than helpful so far, unless they produce the bag today, I'd reject it, rather than believe the old "We'll order them in for you" ruse.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • The spare key was probably lost by the previous owner and replacements from dealers can be very expensive depending on the car. I was given a price of £150 for a new VW key. But you can get them elsewhere for about £50.

The satnav "chip" is just an SD card with the maps on it. The satnav won't work without it, and it's removable so that it can be replaced with newer, updated maps as needed. My Nissan dealer quoted me £250 for the latest maps SD card, but again these can be bought from eBay for about £50, here's the Toyota one:

    http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-TNS510-SD-CARD-WESTERN-EUROPE-2015-2016-Ver-2-UPDATE-/171979249583?nav=SEARCH

To be honest, add these two together and you're not far off what the dealer has quoted him. It all depends what was agreed at the time of sale.

If he has to pay the money and the dealer won't budge (and if he doesn't trust ebay) a good trick here would be to get the dealer to give something that's almost free to them but is worth about £500 to you, such as a free service or two.

Forget this advice. You can't reject a car because it doesn't have a spare key.

If they'd promised you one or said it came with one, fair enough.
