Considering the OP wants to pay for something, yet doesn't want to have his 'privacy invaded' I suggest they go to a shop, buy a DVD with cash and rip it to an MP4 file. They can also wear a aluminium hat on the way to the shops if they want. DVD ripping and encoding isn't too hard either.

If they want to do all of this online, they'll need to create accounts and pay electronically. All of this needs signing up for things and entering personal data.

Agreed, if the OP won't sign up to anything then that rules out pretty much all the legal options perhaps with the exception of BBC iplayer which lets you download stuff to view offline, not many films though.

  • Yes, I think they want 'free' films that just have links to download them. This doesn't usually exist legally - and would expose no way to pay for them either without entering information.
  • Hi, yes there are a lot online but some are legal and some are not. Amazon Prime Video could be one but you have to pay and has some to requirements, I guess.

sign-up - no thanks! (Want my data?

Yeah, as above, this is the sticker. How do you expect to pay without handing over your credit card details?! Post cash or cheque?!

Google Play Movies, if you already have a Google account (including some of your personal details, and maybe even credit card information) would be a way to not hand over much NEW information if you already have a GMail account and/or an Android device.
When you've bought (or rented?) there IS an option to download. With a rental you're obviously time limited. You're limited to the Play ecosystem, but you can play it on your computer in a browser window (not VLC I imagine), phone tablet, or your TV through Chromecast or whatever.
