Where to download films?

I mean legally, and even paid-for!
Want:
Download in divx, mp4, or some other universal format.
Don't want:
Streaming - no good at 36,000 feet.
Subscription - never usually watch films, so this will be a one-off.
Device specific - so no Apple iStuff.
App install - I want it to play on my usual player, VLC.
Privacy invading sign-up - no thanks! (Want my data? You have to have it all, including a stool sample).
I just want to choose, pay, download and go.
Recommendations please, from the assembled members...

Googled before coming here. Got all the usual suspects, none meeting my requirements...
Was hoping to use MSE'ers as a 'google-filter'.0 -
I suspect you will fail to find anything based on your last point, as all sites I am aware of require registering to purchase the downloads.0

Looks like buy film on DVD from retail shop .
Its legal no signup no subscription not device specific .
Convert video to DVD player format of your choosing . You will need to purchase videos that allow a user copy .0 -
I like Amazon Prime video.. yes, it is a streaming service, but you are able to download TV/films (not all...) to a mobile device such as an ipad or phone. We use it to keep the kids occupied on flights, and for me to watch streaming TV at home.
Yes, the selection is limited. However, you can buy/rent additional TV shows and movies - I think you can do this rental process even if you are not a prime member.
However - this is not a 'download an AVI file' service, and needs their app to watch it.
I use to commute regularly by plane, and I ended up buying a portable DVD player - but this was pre-ipads.0 -
sign-up - no thanks!
Since Amazon obviously requires all customers to sign up in order to purchase, it clearly doesn't meet OP impvan's very specific requirements..ringo_24601 wrote: »I like Amazon Prime video0 -
n o but if they havent used Prime trial and as this is a one off then they could avail of free prime for 30 days...
So it half applies - chances are they have an Amazon account already!

Considering the OP wants to pay for something, yet doesn't want to have his 'privacy invaded' I suggest they go to a shop, buy a DVD with cash and rip it to an MP4 file. They can also wear a aluminium hat on the way to the shops if they want. DVD ripping and encoding isn't too hard either.Moneyineptitude wrote: »Not without providing personal details which the OP says they don't want to do.
So not even half applicable
If they want to do all of this online, they'll need to create accounts and pay electronically. All of this needs signing up for things and entering personal data.0 -
Yes, just as JJ Egan already suggested earlier in the threadringo_24601 wrote: »Considering the OP wants to pay for something, yet doesn't want to have his 'privacy invaded' I suggest they go to a shop, buy a DVD with cash and rip it to an MP4 file.
The OP's very specific demands mean that there is no (legal) way of achieving what he wants online. Perhaps he really wanted links to illegal Torrents, but didn't want the thread deleted?0
