Moving gas meter

Hi all,
We are going to build a bathroom under the stairs and we have been told that we would need to move the gas meter in order to have more room.
We have been told that only SGN can do the job (we live in Hampshire). We have been quoted around £700 and we were wondering if these people are the only ones that can do it or we can ask for any gas engineer to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi
I can only relate my experience with Scottish Hydro regards moving a leccy meter.....
I asked them to quote me for moving the meter from a kitchen wall to a cupboard in a bedroom and as requested drew it on a plan of the ground floor
They came back with £570.....I ignored it for some time till I got an email as to why I hadn't gone forward with it
I replied because I thought it was 'jaw droppingly' expensive
The reply I got was that this was the standard price for this sort of job as the main supply cable had to be extended and because of safety reasons this had to be done outside the property
I pointed out that the meter was to be moved to a point CLOSER to the existing incoming supply point.....
So they sent an engineer to actually look at the job.....went away, agreed with me that it was a much simpler job and re-quoted £189...a third of the price
The point I make is that the 1st quote is a 'loadsamoney' price for them if you're daft enough to pay without question...and your 1st question will probably attract another B/S response regards 'all the work involved' and 'Health and Safety'....they could have seen how simple the job was from my 1st plan but still tried it on
I must add that I asked if I could get quotes from other electricians but they have a monopoly on this work themselves0 -
No, it can't be done by an RGI, only by the meter asset owner or their contractor. Hence the often silly quotes. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I wanted the meter just turned around to face the other way, in my last house and was quoted hundreds. That was almost 20yrs ago.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
