Where would you go from Lyon?

We're visiting good friends in Lyon end July...nothing booked, just a promise made so far. We're looking to spend a few days with them, then are undecided as to what to do.

We're wondering if it's worth turning this trip into our summer break? And not knowing much about the wider area, I don't really know where to start.

We're open to flying/driving/training there from south east england. We're open to onward travel of whatever form to wherever.

We're a well travelled family with 11/9 yr old kids who like sight seeing combined with pool time.

Open to all suggestions for our trip...and open to people saying get on a plane home as quick as you can! Would you travel on, for up to a fortnight, from Lyon?

Thanks in advance

Lyon is a great city - well worth a visit. It's a great starting off point for a road trip as suggested above, or you could head East into the Alps. Chambery, Annecy are really nice (Annecy's lake is stunning), and the mountains have some nice resorts like Morzine and Chamonix.

Lyon is convenient for Taize: your kids are just the right age to appreciate what is on offer there (web site is the obvious).
  • Me and a mate went driving through France many moons ago, went past Lyon and kept on going to the South. All the hotels were fully booked so he slept in the car with me on the beach.

Make it a road trip. Look at Gites de France for stops. I would go across to Limoges and then up to http://www.puydufou.com/en/ with kids that age fitting in a day or two there is a must!
But first look at ferries, flights will you camp or rent? and then come back for more info.

It's nearly 400 miles to Puy du Fou - I thought that the OP was looking for something to do in the Lyon area, not the other side of the country!

Can't see the problem myself, it's an 1hr 10 by plane, perfectly doable.

Although I would probably head further south to Bordeaux/Dordogne just to be more sure of the weather.

Lyon's well worth spending a couple of days to explore and is so well located that you can be on the coast, in the mountains or in a dozen historic cities within a couple of hours.

At that time of year I think I'd head east into the edge of the mountains and explore the area round Annecy and Aix les Bains. Obviously, nowhere's quiet in July but heading south will be ansolutely heaving and, if you go to the Camargue area, heaving with mosquitoes as well!

Oh well, perhaps I misunderstood the OP's question which seemed fairly specific, as opposed to "where could I go in France for a July holiday".

    Who knows.
