I suggest you ring immediately and give 30 days notice. Ensure you get through to "Cancellations". I would then advise you cancel the Direct Debit at yor bank about 4 days before the first payment is due, according to your letter. There is a danger they they may try to take the 3rd month's payment anyway.

I think my mistake was I cancelled the DD too early in the 30 days notice
period

Ok i've e-mailed them my cancellation notice i am also trying to ring but getting nowhere at the moment.. I should have known this hassle wasn't worth it.. Ahh well live and learn.. At least i got a confirmation e-mail back to say they've received my mail. Suppose i better cross my fingers..

Also, they've told me I cannot cancel until 30th Nov (end of 30 days). Do you think I could send them a letter now to tell them to cancel from that date?

Yep, I got caught up in this fiasco too, since Oct when I signed up as an existing talk talk customer, I cancelled via letter to the Fife address, yet, they took the connection fee of £9.99 and the first months fee of £9.99. Ive just spoke to customers services because they took a further £9.99 for this month!! Ive cancelled the D/D at my bank and t hey have now cancelled via telephone today at their end, so, basically my 30 day cancellation notice letter didnt count anyway, the new number to call if anyone needs it to confirm cancellation is 08712 003322. So Ive ended up paying £30 for a supposed free box and trial!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Its true, you live and learn, wont touch Setanta with a barge pole in future....not even for a free freeview box xxxx
