  • probably easier just to get one of those freeview boxes for a tenner that keep appearing in the supermarkets then? Don't want to get roped into a contract I have difficulty getting out of!

so if you cancel you have to return the freeview box?

Probably but I would not sign up to the service they are incompetent at dealing with complaints and cancellations. If you have a problem don't talk to customer service they will only mess you around.
Stay well clear of Setanta no matter how much you think its good deal a lot of people have been overcharged and still looking to get refunds.
  • Setanta is a load of rubbish

I joined, they took £10 setup fee, 2 x £9.99 in advance monthly fees, send t me a card that never worked.

I spent hours trying to get through on their 0871 lines.

Eventually succeeeded in getting a very helpful Scots lass, but after 30 minutes on the phone, we could not get it to work.

I then cancelled by email and by letter to the MD at the London office.

After a week I got a return email to say cancellations had to be done by post.

I then did this, copied my MD letter and further requested a total refund as they were in breach of contract. Heard nothing for three weeks until I then received 2 more "welcome "packs in the post.
At least they did not debit my card again but I still do not know if the contract has been cancelled.

One month is up on the 23rd September, so I'll be watching my bank account on that day and reacting accordingly.

    What a complete shower

    UPDATE 27th Sept.

No contact by post, no refund of monies, despite Breach of Contract but no further money taken from my account.

Received an email saying I had to cancel by letter, replied to say this had been done three weeks earlier. The got reply to say that they did not know of the probelme that I was having and detaisl on how to retune my box!!

Nothing to do with why I cancelled!!

If you're a TalkTalk phone customer or you're willing to sign up, you can go in to Carphone Warehouse at the moment and get a two month free trial of Setanta Sports, a premium sports channel available on freeview. You get a freeview box and the viewing card sent to you free of charge, and as long as you cancel within the trial period, you get to keep the freeview box and pay nothing for it!

JUST GOT MY BOX AND CARD BUT HAVING READ ALL THE ENTRIES ON HERE i'M FRIGHTENED TO DEATH OF USING IT. DO I GET TO KEEP THE BOX @ THE END OF THE FREE 2 MONTHS? HOW/WHEN DO I CANCEL SO I DON'T GET CHARGED? THANKS.

I have just spoken to some Scot who rang as I cancelled the Direct Debit at my bank. However, he insisted I return the box and said I have an 18 month contract which is complete rubbish as I am an existing Talk Talk subcriber and TalkTalk confirm that the Talktalk contract is separate from theirs. I did 1471 on the 0800 number I heard and it stated that it was "MGT" who was representing a client (Setanta) so the idiot I spoke to was only interested in the missed D/Debit i.e. a debt servicing agency!

Also, the Freeview box "contract" I found in the box is with International Sports Management (although address is also in Kirkcaldy, read "Setanta"). Clause 4.5 states that the bos is only your property once you have paid all fees for it. since it was FREE then the box is yours. also, clause 2.6 confirms the Setanta contract is a separate agreement. I spoke to TalkTalk also and they confirm this. I will be sending a R/D letter to cancel as it doens not states termination has to be in writing or by phone.

I did get a letter on 15 October (dated 11th) advising I had cancelled the DD and to ring them on an 0871 number!

Yesterday (16th) I rang their customer services (08700 552137) who advised that my subscription was already cancelled that morning as I had cancelled the DD at my bank! They said it ceases 7 days after you do this. He also mentioned that there is minimum notice (which is correct in T&C as it states 30 days notice).

He also confirmed I didnt have to return either Freeview box OR card, although he volunteered a return PO box to return it to he said it had been deactivated (a bit difficult since the card wasn't in the machine at the time!)
He also confirmed that I was't due to be charged! I won't beleive anything until I get a letter though!

I suggest you cancel DD on 6 November (30 days after your subcription starts) and ring them on 0870 number the same day to confirm. Beware as I presume you have a letter advising that they will take out £9.99 2 months from subscribing (6 December)

On what date did you sign up?
  • I signed up on 20/9 (evening)
    Rec'd card on 22/9
    Rec'd Freeview box 29/9
Rang to give notice to cancel 1/10. I also sent a letter but they deny receipt of the letter or acknowledge the phone call!
Cancelled DD about week after as they hadn't ack letter
Rec'd warning 15/10 (dated 11/10) advising of service termination
Also received rude Scottish bloke demanding return of box etc (see post)
Rang them again 17/10 (see post) was assured I owed nothing and contract cancelled
Since then my partner has rec'd at least 4 calls from Setanta's collection compant (I believe is MGT, as I googled the 08000 272 500 number I checked using 1471). As I had sorted this out on 17/10 she hung up on them as told them not to ring!

I finally rang them again today advising them that if they continued to harrass me I would take things further. First the woman said I owed £9.99 "connection fee". She said that as I owed this their automated dialler meant that the caller had no control on ringing me! When I advised she was wrong and there was no fee when I signed up she then said it was a £9.99 for a "30 day notice fee". I replied that was also rubbish.

After insisting I speak to her manager she then put me on hold for 5 minutes! She then came back and said that the £9.99 had been wiped off! I asked for written confirmation be she said they dont do that!

I still wonder when they will try and ask for money again! I agree with earlier coments that it proably wasnt worth the hassle and I wont every sign up with them again! The £9.99 is better spent upgrading Sky as there is more choice!
