If you're going past Buckingham Palace and down Birdcage Walk go into the Guards' museum and Guards' shop and the Royal Military chapel (Guards' chapel). It is next to Wellington Barracks by the side of Buckingham Palace.

The Guards' chapel is where the Diana memorial service came from yesterday and is absolutely beautiful and historic inside.
Have to admit I am biased as we were married there when my husband was in the Coldstream guards.

The museum toy shop is full of good quality souvenirs and if you have little boys it's a paradise with all the soldiers lined up as in battle.

Opposite the chapel St James' park is a good place to relax and watch the many kinds of birds on the lake or have a picnic.

At the back of Buckingham Palace on the road that leads down from Victoria is the Royal Mews where all the fantastic carriages and horses are kept. That's interesting. It's only open certain days so check before you go.

Have fun. There's plenty to do and see in that area of London.

I luv Maxwell's in Covent Garden for a great athmosphere and decent dinner and there is always entertainment in the main square.

thanks for all the info, sadly this time it is just a day trip, but will be back to london to explore more when the cash flow improves. Thanks everyone i am going to be printing this thread and taking it with me lol
  • if u are doing a 1 day travel card, u can get off at moorgaet station ( northern line) which im pretty sure is a single cahnge ( i think its kings cross but dont quote me) if you are going for more than 3 days, and want to go for a 3 day travelcard and are just going to the hotel on the 1st nite, do it using an oyster card an ur journye cost is capped at i think £1.50 for singels for the one off trip ( before using your card to sightsee the next day ).
remember if u are going in more than a monthes time , contact the tower fo london for the ceremony of the keys , free tickets and you get to go inside and watch teh same ceremony performed by the yeomans that has been done for centurys. it is the officail locking of the tower and there are normally 40 9ish visitors max. you have to apply in writing. also if u wanna see st pauls........ its worth trying to get ther5e for a servise if you are that way inclined, for the music if nothing else.
also often forgoten........ the thames barier....... has a visiter center. si pretty interesting for kids....... and has a kick !!! cafe.
im pretty sure its free aswell.
pontoon dock on the DLr and there is a bus service to
