I love those river boats that go up and down the Thames - you could walk to Westminster and jump on at Westminster River Boat station.
It's a great way to see the city.
You can also see St James Park and Downing St, and walk up through Piccadilly and Soho.
I would avoid Covent Garden and eating anywhere in the West End..Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -

i think it is about £3.50 for an adult day pass...... and kiddys her age are free. eating wise, 2 of my personal favourites are ...... pizza hut on the strand....... very nice view while you have pizza buffet. also as you turn right ( so buck house is on your left) to go back to victoria, there is a little pub on the corner does dead good pub grub. and if you walk along the side of buckingham palace ther is a little italian sarney shop just on the corner ( by the girl guide shop) who do you a chikcen sandwich with lumps of chicken in a bun i swear is a s big as your head ....... and its onlyu a couple of quid............... way beter than getting food on the bussaving for more holidays0

I've just been looking at some of the previous posts on here where people were saying that you could get on the sightseeing buses as they are also supposed to act as 'normal' buses.
Has anyone tried this with a normal day pass? It seems a bit cheeky to me but is this a usual occurance or might you get a mouthful if you tried it? We have friends coming over from US who we were hoping to treat to a day touring London £3.50 each is a big saving on the £19 each for the sightseeing buses.
I might chicken out & use my Tesco clubcard points (was saving for something else). Is it just the one bus service that you can buy tickets for with Tesco deals & can you send off for them in advance?
Also can someone tell me if Madame Tussauds still has the replicas of the Crown jewels plus all the old torture chamber instruments that came from the Tower of London? I see no mention of these on their website & from what I can see it appears that the Tower of London has now reintroduced the torture chamber stuff. I remember as a child being fascinated by it all. Is Madame T's still worth going to?
To try & keep costs down - which one would you all choose out of Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London or Madame T's? Your 2nd choice also?
What about Buckingham Palace - is it worth doing?0 -
I luv Maxwell's in Covent Garden for a great athmosphere and decent dinner and there is always entertainment in the main square.
I would not choose to pay to go inside Buckingham Palace again, took relatives from USA there a few years back, I can only remember rows of oil paintings of people all looking alike and each gallery of paintings seemed to have as many guards - I was very disappointed. Taussauds always have heaps of people queuing, so if time is of the essence, give Taussauds a miss.
As to Westminster Cathederal versus Tower of London, I would choose Tower of London especially with children, but lets not forget St.Pauls.SallyD0 -
You see all the things you have missed by not going to London. Keep an eye out for the Travellodge £15 or £26 per night rooms in London. You need a couple of days at least to even begin to explore. Price is per room and some are for 4 people. The Covent Garden lodge is really central for exploring.0

Great thread and a great help, thanks all, as like OP i've only really passed through (except once when i was 16 - and it was so long ago I've forgotten everything!). We have managed to get a travelodge saver room with breakfast for 4 for £40. which I think is great. Its at london city road travelodge - I just need to know how to get there from either the megabus stop nr. victoria or marylebone train station if I go on the train. We also need to get to harrods for our free trip to see Santa. Oh I am so excited, (saddo - I know!) but if you could give me any tips on travel (flybynight - maybe a personal itinery pretty please! lol) it would be much appreciated, thanks guys

According to my London minimap - which has bus routes - the 205 goes from Marylebone directly to City Rd lodge. Or, from Victoria, its the 11 to Liverpool St then the 205 going the opposite way. It`s only a few hundred yds from Liverpool St. Then the 11 from Lpl st will take you to Sloane SQ which is a short walk or the number 14 to Harrods. Buy a one day for £3.50 and you can use the bus all day. Slightly cheaper with an Oyster card.0
