LPG heating

Options
The house we are looking at buying is LPG gas however the property doesn't have its own tank, the whole estate runs of the same tank that is further down the round, therefore we can't swap supplier and have to pay whatever they charge. Does any one know anything about this or the cost of this

Thanks

  • Who is responsible for the whole estate and setting the price? If it's a residents' association owned by the residents you might benefit from bulk purchase prices (although it'll still be a lot more expensive than mains gas).

If it's an external supplier who has a monopoly then you can be held to ransom.

You need to read the 'sticky' at the top of this page ...
  • Is there space to install your own LPG tank or an oil tank? Estate tanks have a poor reputation for cost.
  • I live in a development of six homes converted from stables in a very rural area, and we have a shared LPG tank for our central heating and hot water.

Each home receives it's own bill every quarter, and currently we pay 40p a litre for the gas.

Up until last winter the price was 52p a litre, and I phoned up the gas company, which is local, and quoted the prices I had seen on this forum and got the reduction. The company told me that they would also apply the reduction to the other homes on our development.

Even at 40p a litre, LPG is expensive, and I've had a woodburner fitted in my lounge which has reduced my heating costs significantly.

My electricity bill for the Oct-Dec period was £90, half what it was last year, and my gas bill for the same period was £38. I have just taken delivery of my second pile of wood, which has cost £140. That should see me through to the end of February.

Having a woodburner, I estimate, will save me about £300 a year on heating over LPG, not accounting for the £1500 cost of installing the woodburner.

  • I'd ask the Estate Agent or your solicitor to find out the score on the LPG ;)

LPG is going to be expensive, whether on a shared tank or private. If no mains gas, go for oil every time.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
