The cynic in me suggests that solicitors are going to be like builders ... when it comes to "quick, good and cheap", you can have any two out of the three - but you ain't going to get them all ...

    What's the settlement worth?

Because in divorces the only winners are the lawyers....

You can battle out a settlement yourself. You don't need a lawyer to send a letter offering or counter-offering and you don't have to accept whatever they offer/demand of you.

You can't get a good, cheap solicitor. If they are good, they won't be cheap. Your expectations of what is cheap or reasonable may also need a reevaluation.

Your best bet is to arrange a couple of free consultations with local sols. You can usually get 30 mins free to discuss the situation. Go with the one you trust to work hard for you. Don't listen to anyone who talks about screwing the other person into the ground - that's just a show-off/bully.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

You don't need a solicitor for a divorce, you can do all the paperwork yourself.
You will need a solicitor to draw up a consent order, if you and your soon-to-be-ex can come to agreement between yourselves, however this will require negotiating together and both parties need to be willing. Some solicitors do this for a fixed fee.
If one or the other of you won't co-operate then you MAY need a solicitor to negotiate with the other's solicitor if you don't feel able to represent yourself. However, there are alot of books and websites to help you with this. Wikivorce is great for advice.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

    Depends what the settlements worth...

£10,000 in dispute, and the lawyer costs £9k, the offer on the table was for £4k....

My first solicitor as recommended by my MD cost £350 an hour an he was useless and his best suggestion was remediation. So neither quick, cheap or good.

I sacked him and hired a local solicitor for £250 an hour, she was like a pitfall with PMS and she tore my ex limb from limb. It was awesome to see her work.
  • Thanks for your input. I am currently using wikivorce. I guess its a confidence issue. Can anyone recommend any divorce help books please?

What questions do you actually have?

Divorce can be the simple, or it can take years and cost millions, but the important things to consider:

    Marriage duration
    financial status
    assets
    children

So you can make it simple by explaining in some detail the above:

    For example:
    1: Married 2 years
    2: both work
3: 2 cars, 2 pensions, limited personal debt
    4: no children

The above would be the most straight forward

    whereas:

    1: Married 12 years
    2: 1 works, 1 homemaker
3: 3 properties, numerous loans and mortgages, 3 vehicles
    4: 3 children, 1 at university, 2 at school

    would be much more complicated
