Good Evening,

Today I got a parking ticket from CPM in a private parking area. It was right on the boundary where our office parking is located. After looking at the vehicle registration noted on the ticket I found that one of the numbers was incorrect so it is different to my acgual car reg. Does this mean that the ticket is invalid? If so do I need to follow through with the appeals process as described on this forum? Any advice on this matter would be much appreciated.

Just to add, there are photo's of the car on their website obviously with the correct reg. I found it by typing the incorrect details noted on the ticket

Many thanks

Jonsey

There is a school of thought that parking wardens deliberately enter a minor error on the ticket (wrong digit, wrong car colour, wrong car model) to encourage the motorist to call the PPC, where some carefully asked questions to a totally naive motorist will elicit the PPC's golden nugget - the name of the driver.

Whether this 'strategy' is deliberate, I'm not sure, but it does have some resonance given the number of times we see ticket 'errors'. There again it could just be an indication of the intellectual level of the parking chimps they employ.

If it is a genuine error, then someone else will be getting 'your' Notice to Keeper when the PPC obtains the (wrong) registered keeper details from the DVLA. This by law can't happen until between 28 and 56 days after the parking incident. The unlucky recipient will then be raising a query which will take some time to resolve. All of this delay will mean the PPC runs out of time to lawfully invoke keeper liability and can only pursue the driver (whose identity they will never discover - unless you tell them - hence advice never to phone a PPC).

So my advice is wait and see what transpires. If you do get a Notice to Keeper in the period 29 days to 56 days, then it's quite possible that the school of thought outlined in my opening paragraph may have some mileage.

In the meantime, prepare yourself should you receive anything through the post by reading the NEWBIES FAQ sticky near the top of the forum thread index, one page back from this one. You only need to concentrate on posts #1 and #2 for the time being.

The sticky recommends forwarding an initial appeal around day 25, but that is in a clear cut case where there is no error in the VRN - but as your ticket contains an error, I'd recommend waiting out the full 56 days to see what happens. Come back if you receive anything.

  • What is the exact name of th ppc ?
  • CPM - UK Car Park Management Ltd
  • So it's whatever IPC route you decide to take
  • And what wepuld you recommend? Whats worse case in this instance?

    Worst case:

    1. You appeal to the PPC - rejected
    2. You appeal to the IAS - rejected
    3. You receive barrage of debt collector letters
    4. UKCPM attempt a very rare court case (only 8 court cases from over 29,000 tickets issued in 2014 and 2015 - see following link:
    http://www.bmpa.eu/companydata/UK_Car_Park_Management.html
    5. It's then up to a Judge, but max cost if lost ~£200

    Best case:

    1. As above
    2. Ignore everything after point 1 and ride out initial barrage of debt collector letters - will dry up after about 6 months, but you'll get an occasional follow up.

That's about it, but just be alert for a LBA/LBCCC from UKCPM or real court papers; come back if you receive either. They have 6 years to legally pursue the ticket.

Yes, and if they have indeed made a note of the wrong registration number then you won't receive a letter in the post.
  • Hi chaps,

Just an update on this one. I have received a letter in the post. it was about 35 days later than when I got the ticket on my car . The letter has the correct REG on it this time. So I'm guessing my next step now is to appeal to UK Car Park Management?

Correct. Use the IPC template from the NEWBIES thread. Copy and paste exactly as it is. Nothing added and nothing taken away.
