    I've been Money Tipped!
Years ago we sailed on Thomson Destiny. The ports were magnificent, the ship was OK, think 2-3 star hotel, not my cup of tea at all. It's all down to personal preference. The ship was tired/dated, TINY cabins, food average. We had an outside cabin cruised the Caribbean over 7 nights. There are loads of people that rave about Thomson cruises and they seem to offer great value for money.

My favourite cruising route is the caribbean, so much so we are going again in a few weeks time but this time with RCI. My family enjoy active holidays of sight seeing, tubing or other water sports, beaches.

Cruise critic forum is good for info.

    Hi Piglet :)

We have been on a few cruises with various companies (Thomson included) and are due to go again soon - Thomson again! We have previously done Med and Northern Europe but this time will be doing Caribbean on the first time. Can't wait. I digress :D

In my opinion, they are the best company. The ships may be smaller and they don't have the 'jazz' that you would find on such as a Royal Caribbean ship (water slides, outdoor cinemas etc) but the staff are the friendliest and the whole cruise experience is more laid back and relaxed. Don't get me wrong - there is a formal night if you want to get your posh gear on and have a picture with the Captain etc, and this is lovely, but if you wanted to go casual all holiday you could. Then again, if you fancy sitting down and having waiter service for a five course meal and a wine waiter topping up your glass every time you put it down on the table then you can do this too :)

You mentioned single cabin but didn't specify if you were travelling alone or not. If so, the atmosphere created by the staff and other passengers is very laid back and you will always find people to have a friendly chit chat with.

Hope this helps, I've repeated myself a few times in my excitement at talking about a Thomson Cruise :o

As Master says, jump on cruise critic - gives ideas of drinks prices, excursions and all sorts of stuff.

Get yourself on the Majesty

ps - Discovery is brand new to Thomson and Celebration has been very recently done out I think... :D

    Been on the Dream twice.

Loved it and would happily continue to do it.

First year I done Mediterranean Medley and Treasures of the Mediterranean. Both excellent.

Second year done Moorish Delights. Wasn't as thrilled by this one because it was a lot quieter, low key places but I didn't want to do the same route twice.

Like the routes it's doing this summer but not going away this year.

Rooms are small but you don't spend much time in them, just get ready and sleep.

One formal night per week, it's optional. I've enjoyed it both times, nicer meal and a free glass (or two) of bubbly.

Included for food is buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or a sit down breakfast and dinner (don't think there is a sit down lunch). Both are very good.

There are also 3 pay restaurants, I went to two and would recommend both.

Drinks aren't included but you can upgrade to all inclusive. We got it free the first year but second year was £30 per day per person and types of drinks are limited. We bought a wine package on board and just bought drinks. Spent less than the all inclusive price and meant we could drink why we wanted.
  • Thomson cruises are are ideal for your first cruise, make it as short as possible to test the water as you say. Once you have cruised Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean you will never go back to Thomson, albeit the other cruise lines are slightly more expensive but I can assure you you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

What's your suggestion for a 20-30 something couple? Only done Thomson, was a fair mix during summer holidays but older out with (as expected)

If you are the party type and enjoy plenty of activities onboard I would recommend Royal Caribbean, one of their modern ships like Oasis, Anthem, Quantum or Allure - you wouldn't get bored for sure. Look at Norwegian Cruiseline as well.
If you want a more romantic cruise, more sedate but with an older demographic then choose Celebrity Equinox, Eclipse or Silhouette. There are so many great cruise ships available today I would suggest you goggle search for "How to Choose a cruise", cruise critics is a good website for valuable info and will give you all the insider info to minimize your risk on choosing a dud - Thomson are really the worst choice, I can assure you - happy cruising.

The main problem with MSC is that they are an Italian Cruise Line, the clientele will be mostly European and the main language will not be English - if you are happy with that, go for it !
  • We booked a Thomson cruise yesterday for Jan 2017 in the Caribbean. It's on a new (to Thomson) ship called Discovery, and we are getting a free all inclusive drinks package. My brother and SIL have been on a couple of their cruises and thought them good value. I imagine some of the American cruise ships are 'posher' but we're happy with the overall deal with Thomson.
