    I'm no expert but...

The law used to be that the physical cheque had to make its way to the branch of issue and I'm not aware of this changing. Having said that, however, in a previous job my department occasionally had to bounce cheques and there was a box to tick on the form along the lines of 'image not acceptable'.

We weren't a retail bank and didn't handle a huge number of cheques but two or three times in 16 years we did get a copy of the cheque as the original had been lost in transit and this was sufficient for us to debit our customer. From memory I think that we contacted the customer but whether this was a legal requirement or out of courtesy I'm not sure. I'm assuming that we could have ticked the box and returned the cheque but I never bothered finding out.

Why not pay in by post, or alternatively, you can pay in at your post office. They have special envelopes for the majority of banks for the purpose. I haven't been in a branch for years, I always pay in one or other of these ways.

I wanted to pay in a cheque to Santander via my Post Office, when I asked Santander they sent me envelopes addressed to Clearing Centre, Bootle, Merseyside and required a stamp?

I thought I needed "special" post office envelopes and asked again only to be told the envelopes and paying in book I have will allow me to pay in at the post office.

Can anyone tell me is this right, the envelopes are printed in green with top left having a green triangle?

If this is correct why does it ask for a stamp or are these dual purpose envelopes?

I can only get brief answers from Santander, they don't seem to want to elaborate on the detail or procedure, not great customer service.

Thanks EssexExcile, that was all I needed to know, shame Santander couldn't have told me exactly that...

When I asked they denied that had a pay-in-at-Post-Office service!

This is the one reason I keep my old cahoot account. Pre paid envelopes for the one or two cheques a year I get.
