Hi can anyone help please? I seem to have broken my PC and it won't start. I updated from Mozilla to Firefox on Monday evening and shut down the pc as normal. Since Tuesday morning every time I try to start the PC I get the following message:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
Safe mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally
All of these seem to freeze permanently - if I choose the last two options the Windows XP logo apears with the blue bar as if it's starting up then goes to black screen; with the other 3 I get a screen filled with messages that start "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\
yet there is no command prompt.
Is it completely b*****ed or can it be fixed? I've never encountered this before. Luckily my internet connection works with the laptop but I have things on the pc that I haven't backed up
.
Thanks all.

try safe mode again and wait for
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition
to stop, after a while it should boot into safe mode and you can use windows restore points to go back to Sunday or earlier
it may take a little while to get to safe modeEx forum ambassador

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. It came preloaded with Windows XP and in the 11 months that I've had it I have not found time to make a back up CD
so the answer is no. Is there anything else I can do?

Browntoa, thanks for your reply. It's been stuck on that screen for the past half hour. Do you think it'll take longer than this?

What is the make of model of this PC?Chocoholic wrote: »Safe mode

Well, the easiest thing you can do is get hold of an XP install Cd for whichever version you are using (home or pro). Off a friend, or even download in (technically illegal, but since you already own the software, and you won't be using it to register or anything, it should be ok). Stick the CD in the drive, hit a certain key during the POST (power on self test - usually happens during the first 5 seconds of turning on. The key depends on what computer you have. F8 is a common one), and select to boot from the CD. When the setup screen comes up, you want to repair the XP installation (not use the recovery console).
It should fix the XP install, then you should be able to boot it up and all will be fine.
Thats the easiest method by far.
Alternatively, boot into safe mode, so it lists all the drivers it is loading. Look through the list, and post which one it stops on, since this could indicate that you have a missing file. If this is the case, you may be able to remove the hard drive and plug it into a mates computer, and copy the offending file onto your hard drive.0 -

It's a MedionPC MT 7 Typ: MED MT 410G. That's the information I got from the back of the desktop tower, I hope it's right.
The first line is that I can just about see is
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\AppPatch\drvmain.sdb
The last line is
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\Mup.sys
There are 22 lines in between that start multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS (or Drivers) with a code of some sort that end in SYS or sys.
Thanks for your help, I really hope we can get this sorted out.
