Well, the easiest thing you can do is get hold of an XP install Cd for whichever version you are using (home or pro). Off a friend, or even download in (technically illegal, but since you already own the software, and you won't be using it to register or anything, it should be ok). Stick the CD in the drive, hit a certain key during the POST (power on self test - usually happens during the first 5 seconds of turning on. The key depends on what computer you have. F8 is a common one), and select to boot from the CD. When the setup screen comes up, you want to repair the XP installation (not use the recovery console).
It should fix the XP install, then you should be able to boot it up and all will be fine.

Thats the easiest method by far.

Alternatively, boot into safe mode, so it lists all the drivers it is loading. Look through the list, and post which one it stops on, since this could indicate that you have a missing file. If this is the case, you may be able to remove the hard drive and plug it into a mates computer, and copy the offending file onto your hard drive.

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure if I've understood correctly - apparently it came with a recovery CD and Support CD (Drivers etc) but these are useless in this situation, is that right?

Windows XP was preloaded but DH set up the machine so I don't know where he's put the bumph that came with it. I have to go out now but will be back later - should we look for the stuff that came with the PC?

    Thanks,

I would be surprised if the laptop didn't come with a windows install CD. I know that Dells come with one, though it has dell labels over it.

If you do find one, or manage to borrow one from a friend/work, here is a site which can walk you through the process.

    The last line is
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\Mup.sys
Googling mup.sys returns 1000's of results, including this long thread, though the freeze is not necessarily caused by mup.sys.

    Some suggestions include:

    1. XP repair install (you need an XP Setup CD to do this).
    2. Run Recovery Console and disable mup (again, need an XP CD).
    3. Remove all USB devices (keyboard, mouse, modem etc.) from external ports.
    4. Remove internal cards and/or memory and reseat them.
  • i had mozilla and firefox and i've got exactly the same problems, if i actually manage to get on pc aol freezes after a while then the pc freezes when i try to shut down it says you don't have permission to shut down and i have to do it manually.
when starting pc it goes through the windows window wuth blue line then it either shuts off, goes to black screen or turns on normally but it doesn't last long till it shuts itself off again. it's driving me mad.
i've also tried to remove the 2 paogrammes and when pc reboots their still there?
i'm totally miffed as to what the problem is.
pc didn't come with a reboot cd so i don't know what to do now
