Broadband wiring help.

I would be very careful pulling out the bottom of the two plugs as the outer sheath has pulled off the inner wires. Do you have a replacement for this?

elsien, why did the engineer visit? They don't generally change these things for the sake of it (unless openreach have had a policy change).
The new faceplate incorporates a filter before the connections for extensions, so extensions (a) don't need filters and (b) don't have the ADSL/VDSL signal present, which is why the router must be by the master socket. It is usually a better solution than having filters dangling from every phone socket in the house, as a lot of broadband problems are / were caused by a dodgy filter somewhere.
The only way to go back to what you had would be to replace the new faceplate on the master socket with an old type one, but you then might have to disconnect any extension wiring from the faceplate to be replaced and attach it to the replacement one - from memory this requires a punchdown tool. You would then need filters on every phone socket again
"Homeplugs" plug into the mains and have an ethernet socket on the front. They do some magic to send ethernet down mains cables, so you have two of them, each plugged into mains sockets near where you want the network to go from and to - in your case one near the master socket and router and the other near the desktop.
My opinion of them is not suitable for polite company, but many swear by them.

The phone socket on the master socket is filtered. Therefore it cannot be used to extend your ADSL signal.
If you remove the faceplate and unfiltered extension can be wired to the A and B terminals.

If you have electric socket near the BT socket.
the easiest things to do is move your router next to it.
