My broadband entered via the master socket in the downstairs sitting room. I then ran a phone line extension upstairs to the router for the desktop (connected by ethernet) and wifi. I know this isn't recommended as it slows things down, but it was sufficient for my needs.
However during a recent engineer visit, he changed the setup so the broadband and phone have been separated, the implications of which escaped me at the time.

I do not want to run a separate adsl cable from the master socket to the upstairs router as this will involve lifting carpets and floorboards which I really don't want to do. So at the moment I've had to move the router downstairs so don't have internet on the desktop which needs to stay upstairs.

Is there any gadget or gizmo which will allow me to recombine the adsl and phone so I can go back to using the phone extension wire that I was using previously?

Thanks

  • Hi,

is the phone line wired in?

maybe a double filter would work.

Why not have your router near the master socket and use WiFi or Homeplugs to get the connection upstairs?

Don't thinkmy desktop does wifi, and I don't know what a Homeplug does. I'm not with BT if that makes a difference.

    Double filter didn't work.

You could stick a WiFi adapter in your desktop (even a USB one) or use Homeplugs, as listed here, where you effectively run your ethernet connection over the house wiring.

You plug one in near the router and connect it to the router with an ethernet cable. You plug a second one in near your computer and connect that with an ethernet cable to your computer.
Job done (well, there may be some very simple setup required).
So long as both sockets the Homeplugs are plugged into are on the same ring main, which they almost certainly will be in a typical house, they should work fine and will give a good connection. Particularly useful where WiFi can be hampered by obstacles such as thick walls between the router and the computer.

looks like the engineer has fitted a VDSL/ADSL frontplate on your NTE5

if you don't want it take it off, it is plug in and is only secured by two screws

    www.run-it-direct.co.uk/btvdslfaceplate

that is a link to show what the engineer has fitted

if you remove the two pozi screws in the bottom of the front plate the bottom section should pull off and then the VDSL/ADSL front plate will come off leaving the back box and the NTE5 refit the bottom front plate to this and then go back to using your router upstairs using an old style ADSL filter

take care when removing the front plate as your extension wiring to the upstairs socket will be terminated to the back of the face plate

As above, remove the faceplate and plug the extension straight into the unfiltered socket.

I would be very careful pulling out the bottom of the two plugs as the outer sheath has pulled off the inner wires. Do you have a replacement for this?
