Delayed flight Thomson

Dear all, odd one but keen for advice.
I have just got home after the worst couple of days of my life. My family of four were due to fly to Mexico yesterday with Thomson for a luxury all inclusive holiday. We stayed at the premier inn at Gatwick the night before and turned up at check in at 7am. It's my first long haul flight in about 18 years as I am not the biggest fan of flying. But I had psyched myself up and was ready to do it. Anyway we arrived at check in to be told that the flight was delayed by 23 hours. There were no Thomson reps around and we were shipped to the Hilton at the south terminal over night. Anyway I can't explain it but after I had psyched myself up for the flight it cmpeletly threw me and over the next 24 hours I had no sleep and the mother of all panic attacks. We arrived at check out for the scheduled flight this morning at 8.15 only to find out it was further delayed until 9.15am. I just went into a spin and couldn't get on the plane. So I have had to walk away from a £3k holiday and even though they are being very supportive I know my kids and husband are devastated, I asked them to go without me but they refused.
The customer service from Thomson was appealing and I know it was my decision not to get on the plane but it was caused by the delayed flight. Does anyone know whether I could get any of the costs back???? Regards

Under EU261, if a flight is delayed in excess of 5 hours, and the reason for the delay is within the control of the airline, you can choose not to travel and you would be able to receive a refund for the flights plus compensation of €600 per passenger
This has added complexity as you intended to travel on the delayed flight so received hotel etc. (Not sure at which point you decided not to travel...did they need to offload your baggage etc)
Did you see a first aider/doctor at the airport for your panic attack? If so the best bet is probably to speak to your travel insurance
