    How many business miles?

You need to look at allowance and mileage rate if you want the company miles funded properly.

Over 10k the tax free rate goes down to 25p

If no allowance 40p is very marginal to run a car.

Thanks all. We have just come back from looking at a few cars at a dealer. We have ruled out all the big 4x4s. The wife absolutely loves the Nissan Qashqai. We took a £7.5k one for a test drive and I must admit it was very nice. It was over budget, but low miles, good spec and pretty mint.

So will have to do a bit of bargain hunting to try and get one down towards the 5-6k mark.

I see the 1.5 Diesel is the engine to go for, these look like they are a grand+ more than the petrol.

Also the wife likes the sunroof, parking camera and sat nav. This is going to be a tough one to find.

    .

There seem to be a few in your price range. I haven't checked if they have all the toys you want.

If you're looking at a Qashqai, and you want cheap to run, you should look at the Juke too. You'd need to get a high spec one for all the toys your wife wants, and you'll need to look even harder if you want 4x4, and I don't know if it's on budget, but it'll be cheaper to run than a Quashqai, with a similar driving positon.

I'm another one who chooses to drive a Landcruiser in preference to my other vehicles, visibility superb, controls simple as and all work and don't have a mind of their own, its very comfortable, solid on the road, one of the smoothest auto boxes to be found, doesn't get blown around by the wind, takes not a blind bit of notice of the quality nor grip of the road surface nor standing water nor anything else, the only downside is fuel consumption.
We've covered almost 50k miles over five years in our Landcruiser. I agree, a slush box as smooth as my E class and insanely reliable.

It's not immune to wind, and on typical Highland coast roads it's about as stable as blamanche until you get to about 65+ when inertia takes over - you'd just better hope nothing jumps out in front of you!

Now coming up to 12 years old, it's had less than £1,500 spent on repairs and maintenance including tyres, batteries (it takes two), cam belt, wipers and oil/filters.

That said, it's used over £10k in diesel - to put it in perspective! I'd take the V70 over the Land Cruiser for a motorway trip any day.

In fairness few Qashquis are 4x4 either.

I think it is the image of an SUV and the elevated driving position that the OPs wife is after.

Not sure the Juke would be big enough.

I don't think the running costs will be much different as they share some engines.

    Not sure about depreciation though.

Before buying a £5k car have you looked into any possible restrictions placed on the vehicle by the company? I'm with my second employer who pays car allowance(always company cars before). Both times there has been mileage and age restrictions. i.e. no older than five years and no more than 120k mileage.

No point buying a car that they won't pay towards.
