if you want a commanding driving position I find the mercedes actros hard to beat not very fast or economical but it really does have a commanding driving position
You mad thing you, don't you know a mere gust of wind could send you to oblivion :eek:, have you not considered the children and nuns carrying boxes of abandoned kittens0 -
My wife has a new sales job, that will involve a lot of motorway driving.
She is convinced that she needs a SUV. She wants to be high-up when driving long distances on motorway.
We have a budget of up to £5,000 (may be able to squeeze another £1k if it gets a lot more for the money)
Wife's priority:
* Comfortable driving on motorway
* Cruise control
* A sunroof
* Nothing too boxy looking.
My priority:
* Cheap to run and reliable
Nothing has really jumped out at us at the moment. Any suggestions very welcome.
Thanks very much,
What the two of you are looking for is mutually exclusive
The suggestion of the Land Cruiser upthread will make you have a coronary. If you could get one for less than £5k, you wouldn't want to have it, and good luck getting anything about mpg in the 20s in a brand new one let alone an old one...0 -

the wind can be a problem but i find the aircon deals with that quite well if you just turn the blower up a bit0 -
Hello all,
Thanks very much for the more constructive comments. Some of the comments I thought a bit harsh, but hey it’s the internet :beer:
It isn’t really about fashion. This simply is a case of wanting to sit higher up with a comfortable spacious ride. (I like the pillow idea!).
We used to own a camper van (based on a Renault Trafic) and really enjoyed cruising along at 65-70 with a great view of the road. Admittedly I did most of the driving, but I never had a problem with stability on the motorway. I think that is a complete non-issue, but thanks for the concerns.
I think the budget isn’t going to stretch to a SUV with the lower millage and reliability we’d be looking for. I think realistically £7k is the mark where these SUVs become feasible. That would get a really fantastic regular car. So food for thought. We are off to look at a few at a dealer today to get a sense of what they are like. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks once again.
Cheers and have a fantastic Sunday all0 -

It's not what I'd choose, but I think the OP's wife should buy an SUV if that's what she wants.0

I think the comments about stability are more to do with stability in an emergency avoidance situation where the 4X4,s and suv,s got a bad press a few years ago
but on a busy motorway is emergency avoidance ever possible unless you are in the nearside lane and can use the hard shoulder
the problem i see is your budget and for that kind of money you could end up with an suv that is getting on in the years and possibly high in the miles, this type of vehicle could quickly become a money pit, as cheap to buy doesn't always mean cheap and easy to fix
but if your wife is set on an SUV i would say try and up the budget a bit and try for a newer vehicle0 -
