Peugeot 107 - worth it for the low road tax or avoid?

If someone who had just passed their automatic driving test wanted to buy their first car, which one would be a good one to go for? When searching for automatic cars around £3K with low road tax there seem to be few options: the Smart (too small), Peugeot 107 and the Toyota Aygo. Some people tell me to avoid these makes as they are unreliable in their older age. I found a website listing the most 100 reliable cars (www.reliabilityindex.com/top-100) and the Peugeot 107 is 12th in the list, so is it that bad?

for your budget i would strongly consider a jazz rather than dwell on ultra cheap road tax

Cheap tax may well save you a couple of hundred a year but if it means buying a dog then whats the point?
Take reliability surveys with a pinch of salt, Average repair bill nearly £300 for the 107. Yet larger cars with more to go wrong can cost less to repair yet are lower down the list?

As above, forget "road tax" (doesn't exist), vehicle excise duty (tax on owning an old or luxury car) is a very minor motoring cost, when compared with all the other costs, like insurance and fuel.

Are you sure?! Taking the Peugeot 107 as an example, that is in insurance group 3 of 50 (https://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups/peugeot/107/hatchback-2005/). Surely the insurer knows the age of the driver when giving the quote so can factor that separately to the type of car?!0 -
Aygo/107/C1 autos have a robotised manual box complete with clutch (but no pedal) that changes gear for you, not a rea auto box at all.
These boxes are not reliable long term, and they are horrible things to drive, especially in traffic and parking.
If it has to be auto in a smallish car try to find a proper torque converter box, as found in most Korean small cars (and Yaris 1 but not Yaris 2), not only are these infinitely better to drive, with a sensible oil change as the mileage rises they will normally see the life of the car out trouble free.
The other sort and twin clutch gearboxes too, will be the problem that scraps many cars so fitted.0 -
£3k will get you an auto 1.0 toyota IQ (its a proper auto too)- will actually feel bigger inside than a 107/aygo as they're pretty wide. Much more practical, reliable and fun than the smart, and far better built and more premium than the older 107/c1/aygo0
