Have a look at this link and see if it helps........

  • I think you use Vegetable at hotter temperatures than the others. I have been using Vegetable oil for the past 6 months and it has been fine...great for roasties!!...thats all we seem to use oil for or frying an egg.

  • I use sunflower oil for frying, even if it's frying an onion as the base for a sauce etc that I might later add olive oil to. I also use it in some salad dressings, esp for pasta etc since it is a lot lighter than olive oil and sometimes actually dresses the food better.

But for dipping I always use olive oil. similarly just a tbsp or so at the end of a tomato sauce can make a really big difference.
  • Thanks for the replies. I've been doing a bit of research and it seems that the description of "vegetable oil" can cover a multitude of albeit potential sins. Within reason, it can and is made from a mix of oils from all sorts of sources. Thats probably why its slightly cheaper. However, sunflower oil is generally the cheapest "single source" oil, and is also lower in those naughty saturated fats and higher in those good unsaturated fats and vitamin E.

Rapeseed oil is also good value - this is the Wiki entry:

Canola oil (or rapeseed oil) contains both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of 2:1 and is second only to flax oil in omega-3 fatty acid. It is one of the most heart-healthy oils and has been reported to reduce cholesterol levels, lower serum tryglyceride levels, and keep platelets from sticking together. Some UK farmers (such as Hillfarm Oils[1]) & Farrington Oils[2]) have started to produce cold-pressed rapeseed oil as a versatile cooking oil and dressing, similar in use to olive oil.

I only use sunflower oil now. It does everything vegetable oil would do, but I find it gives a lighter crispier taste. It's not strongly flavoured, it works fine for sweet or savoury foods.

I don't see why you would need both in the cupboard, one or the other will work fine. I just prefer sunflower.

Seakay is spot on! The cheap vegetable oil from Tescos is 100% rapeseed and is healthier than olive oil. Can't seem to get this fact through to OH who insists on buying sunflower though.

Most of the vegetable oil I've seen is 100% Rapeseed oil so better for you than sunflower oil (it's actually better for you than olive oil if you have it uncooked - doesn't taste as nice though)

The Italians would never waste the quality of olive oil for deep fat frying.

Veg oil is more for deep fat frying and olive oil has the better flavour for shallow frying and salad dressings and so on.
