    Repaired, or unrepaired?

No, no problem there at all. There used to be a requirement for CatC cars to be identity checked (VIC test), make sure they weren't using the ID on stolen cars, but that was discontinued last month.

So where are the checks done now ? These used to be done by the police , we got at least one stolen vehicle recovered after every exam session !

They aren't. They were discontinued completely, since less than 40 hooky cars were detected in 900,000 tests from 2003...

You must declare the car is cat D to the insurance or it will be voided at inception.
Some will not insure any cat car, some dont care, so check first and not by ticking boxes on a website, in person, over the phone.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Nope. As with SACs, the onus is entirely on insurers to ask all questions they feel pertinent. If they don't ask, they cannot hold you responsible for not volunteering the information.

    Rubbish.

I drove a Cat D car for several years, and two insurers. Neither asked if it were a previously written off vehicle, so I didn't tell them - there is no obligation to do so.

Thought that might be the answer . If you have taken a car for a VIC you know why they never found many .
We used to get a VQ13 with tons of info from insurance companies , you could nearly sy which ones would be found to be stolen ones with th id of the written off car before the car and even turned up. We got loads of notifications but only invited certain ones. The car ringers must be rubbing their hands with glee. This is likely to see an increase in stolen cars , my old force doesn't even have a Stolen Vehicle Squad and very few qualified Stolen Vehicle examiners.

Given that only one in 22,500 cars tested showed up hooky, average over more than a decade, I don't think it'll make the slightest difference at all.

to leveller2911 repair parts for these cars are very dear so repair work might be more paint than materials for a cat d, personally it would not be my choice for a 5 year life to a 17 year old i would ask the bodyshop to source me something like a fairly late plate ka with the suberb fiat engine fitted this will easily do 5 years with a young newdriver have a good retail value when son reaches 22 if he keeps it maintained

to Minrich the car cloners buy cat x and or cat d they never bought cat c as they could be caught, stolen vehicles squads like in leeds and manchester only dealt in large scale car chop gangs etc it was dvla who did the one offs as they occasionally came to me if mistakes were ever made in paperwork like log book chassis numbers etc ,ive only ever been visited once as a registered number plate supplier in the 10 years ive had a licence this tells me plenty of govt saving money short term, dont even get me started on insurance companies selling stripped out shells to the general public when you know the thieves are going to buy it because they already have the parts ,think land rover
