non-GB Licence and 3 year rule/law

It would be the same as a GB licence holder, over 70 the licence needs to be renewed every 3 years.

Thanks Rover Driver - So is it answer 1 or 2???? From what you say I now think:

I could drive in the uk as a UK resident until I am 70, with a non-GB driving licence, and therefore do not have to change-over to a GB driving licence. When I am 70 I then have to renew every 3 years - Correct????

Yes, that's it.

Bear in mind, also, that your licence must have a valid, up-to-date address at which you can be contacted in a timely manner. If you have a Hungarian contact address still, then you can leave it at that until you are 70 or you have been here three years, whichever comes first (and, no, it has nothing to do with when you first drove a car here).

If your only address is UK, then you WILL need to change it for a UK licence, because the Hungarian authorities won't issue a Hungarian licence with a UK address on it.

If not, then you don't need a licence.

So are you saying, if I still have a Hungarian DL with Hungarian address on it whereby I then become a UK resident (living at a UK address only) I then only have 3 years in which to drive in the UK on that DL, in which case I would then need to exchange it for a British DL???

If you can no longer be contacted at the address on your licence, you need to change the address on it immediately, no matter if that licence is UK, Hungarian or wherever. If you don't have a valid address that the Hungarian licence people will accept, then you will need a UK licence.

The "or three years" bit only applies if you are 67+ when you move here.

It's a shame DVLA (GOV.UK) didn't make it clearer, such as:

You can drive in Great Britain on your non-GB full valid driving licence until you’re 70, or for 3 years only if you are 67+ when become a resident in the UK, whichever gives you the longest driving period.
