New car on order - dealer lending car in the interim?

Hi There,

I am ordering a new car tomorrow (last thing I want to be doing in January but unfortunately my money pit of an old car has given up on me!).

Therein lies the issue. I need a car to get to work for the two/three weeks that my new car will take to be delivered.

I have rented one for the past week, as it works out (significantly) cheaper than getting the train, however ideally I would rather not have this cost.

Has anyone ever had any joy with the dealer lending them a car for this period? I don't directly know anyone that has, but "friends of friends" have apparently.

I know I can just ask and try my luck, but if anyone had any experience in this it would be great.

Thanks!

I'd say your chances are about as great as those of your friends, i.e. none. If you were really lucky you might be offered a deal on hire costs.
  • I would think it unlikely. After all, it's not the dealer's responsibility to keep you mobile when you choose to buy a non-stock car which will take several weeks to become available.

Which I totally understand. There are no stock cars available unfortunately. Just a question in case any one had been lucky in the past :D A colleague just confirmed Audi have lent her a vehicle whilst she's waiting for her new car. I guess I can only ask, and get a no.

Nothing to lose by asking. You could always say you'll place the order if they can give you a runabout while you wait for it. You may have to pay for insurance on it, but they might just have a trade-in they're prepared to loan you.
Do you need a brand new car though? Why not save a significant amount of money and buy a young traded in model, still with some manufacturer's warranty on it.

Was that part of the deal prior to signing for the car though? I'd imagine that being the only way you can get this.

If you've already bought the car, I'd say your luck will be out.

I wish I could've been as lucky as I was last time, when I got a pre-registered vehicle that was 5 months old and had 74 miles on the clock! I found the receipt the other day and can't believe the money I said against list price.

Unfortunately this time around, I'm going down the PCP route, and with the discounts I can get through work and some offers thrown in, going brand new, I feel is the best decision for me.

I've not bought it as yet, will be doing so in the morning. Worth a shot!

Did you take the cost of a hirecar or public transport for the interim period into account in the sums you did?

Just mention that you're going to have a look around elsewhere as you really can't be without a car for 3 weeks but you'll come back later if nothing can be found.
They may come up with something to get you to sign up, they won't want you to leave without a deal signed.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

I ordered a new car many moons ago (2001) and it'd take a week to get there and the reason I was buying it was because I had no car (broken down/towed Friday evening) and needed one to get to work the following Monday morning (200 miles). The dealer lent me a car (free).

It's going to be hit and miss really isn't it. If they've got one,etc etc
