Just clearing out photos and stuff and came across this taken at Durham Miners Gala ( Durham Big Meeting) a couple of years ago. This event has been going for nearly 150 years now and is much changed. Every pit village used to have a banner and most had a colliery band. The band would walk behind their banner through Durham City to the racecourse where the trades unions leaders would speak to the huge crowds and then they would march back again at the end of the day. Numbers have been made up in recent years with banners and brass bands from all over the country.
This snippet was taken as one of the bands came over Elvet Bridge to make their way to the Market Place I seem to remember that it was a band from Yorkshire and they were fabulous. There was a carnival atmosphere....:):)
Sorry folks....doesn't work......
Dear Sil lives in Gilesgate and went into labour on Big Meeting daysome 40 odd years ago... what a palaver!!0 -

Feels so good to have a cyber family.
We don't know each other apart from our usernames regardless of our caste, creed and colour... but the love and caring amongst us is great.
Sorry for sounding a bit mushy and sloppy but the whiskey doesn't help

And mine and i got married in July:eek:
I was at the hairdressers at 8 and the time I got back home I was like a drowned rat.
There was an old custom when I was married of throwing coins out of the car window as the bride drove off to church......usually there was a crowd of neighbours ...especially children watching who would scrabble for the pennies.........I had one very elderly lady with a huge brolly watch as I left the house and we couldn't decide to throw the pennies at her or not:rotfl:To do is to be. You have every right to be mushy with what you've been through :kisses3:
As for wedding days, we got married in October, it rained all morning but when we got married it was in a ray of sun through one of the stained glass windows, and when we were having the photos done my heels were sinking into the grass and we were squinting into the sun lol.
Oh, and our vicar was called John Lennon lolWhat is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
