Damp spot appearing?

We redecorated our hall and landing a few months ago, took off all wallpaper and had it painted.

We have a large window in the landing at the side of the house. I just noticed last night there is a small dark spot that has appeared , close to the window, lower right side, from underneath the paint :(

Think this is likely to be damp? On closer inspection I there may be other little spots forming close to it. I let the hair dryer blow a bit of hot air from a few feet away and it faded, but did not disappear.

What should I do?

  • Could be mould spots caused by condensation. If the air is humid it will condense on the colder parts of the wall like around windows.

The existing mould can be scrubbed off using a mild bleach solution or mould cleaner and you can paint over but it will come back unless you fix the source of the problem.

It will most likely be condensation but could also be coming in around the window if it isn't sealed properly.

Check the window is sealed correctly, allow the air to flow near the window (keep curtains open) and heat the hall etc more at night.

Allow the area to dry out properly (until the middle or end of next summer) before decorating.
