Gainer-Led Broadband Switching

I decided to switch out of my Tesco Broadband and phone package in December, because they're switching me to TalkTalk following a buy-out in early 2015.

I decided to go to Plusnet. Things their end seem to be going to schedule. However, I haven't received any correspondence from Tesco/TalkTalk. According to all the gumpf I've read from Ofcom and USwitch, I'm supposed to receive letter detailing costs etc from them:

"The new rules mean you no longer have to cancel your contract with the provider you're leaving. Instead just contact the provider to whom you wish to transfer your business and tell them you want to switch. It's their responsibility to handle the switch from start to finish.

From here you'll get written confirmation that the switch is in motion. This will come from the provider you're leaving and the one you're joining. The letter from the one you're leaving must tell you which services are affected, which are unaffected and whether you're liable for any early cancellation charges."

Is this actually the normal practice?

Tesco just took another month's DD from my bank account on the 5th and the switch is due to complete tomorrow (8th). My concern is that someone has screwed up, that Tesco/TalkTalk still think I'm with them and won't refund me any overpayments.

  • Are you keeping your existing telephone number?

Your welcome pack from plus net should tell you what number they are providing the service on so check that. If it's not your existing number then plus net are doing a new line provide rather than a switch or number port. If this is the case then tesco/talk talk won't have received any notification of you moving and there will be no cancellation in place.
  • Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure I've had a welcome pack from Plusnet. Just emails and the router. I've not had any physical letters though.

I am keeping the same number according to their emails. And my old broadband went offline today.

I'm kinda guessing that this sort of switchover mess is the norm though? Last time I switched I remember it being an expensive nightmare.
