I read the witches trilogy as well and liked it. I've also read some of Anne Rices books, not the BDSM haha, The Witching Hour I think it was called. It was the start of a series but at that time I couldn't find any of the others I might go and have a look now.
The 50 shades series had quite a strange effect people who never read books were reading them and talking as if they were this amazing story/romance with such a great plot so yes I got suckered in and read one but it was so repetitive I couldn't be bothered with the others.

Hi all, really enjoying this thread.

I've not long finished Girl on a Train. Thought it was really good.

My favourites at the moment are the St Mary's Chronicles.

It's about time travel - but don't let that put you off!

I've just finished a real page turner but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called! Doesn't sound promising, does it?!
It was about a woman who got mugged and sustained a head injury. Since then she has been having visions about killing two girls.
I wish I could remember what it was!

I like Barbara Erskine too, but I think my favourite favourite is !!!! Francis. Have all his books and re-read them often.

Oh, for Pete's sake! D ick Francis

Thanks so much for starting this thread as it fits in with my determination to change my life style - i.e. stop watching so much rubbish TV and do something with my time!! today, despite the rain I have done my half hour walkies (no longer have a dog - result weight gain!!)
Am now on here rather than watch tv I dont enjoy!! Am also aiming to go to bed @ 11.30 from now on and read - all snuggled up in bed - sooooo cosy!

If you liked Game of Thrones then you will love Patrick Rothfuss Name of the Wind George RR Martin said that he wished he could write as well as Patrick!!

I too am an avid Terry Prachett fan but havent managed them all yet!
I also love Miss Read and Mave Binchy (sorry spelling not my strong point) - you either find these too soft or love em!! :D

What I read, I suppose, depends on my mood!
Off to dip into my other favourite threads and then early to bed - keep going folks.

Can we have some reviews as well (say 10 or so lines?) I will do this when I ve finished Flying Under Bridges. It would help me decide what should go on my Chazzer/library list! :A
    Cheers

  • Every time I pop back on here I end up buying more books for my kindle!
Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, Stephanie is a somewhat inept bounty hunter, her sidekick is an overweight ex hooker. Do not under any circumstances read these on public transport, I did and ended up getting stared at as I kept laughing out loud.

My U3A book group had become rather trivial, so I told them that I would like a more academic approach; not totally serious, but as I did with A-levels classes. One woman left, but we did manage it, with a few hiccups.

I felt a major boost when a very intelligent woman, still taking philosophy courses at 90, said how much more she got out of novels with my probing questions.

I wish I had the guts to take that approach - I gave up in the first 6 months as virtually everybody just wanted to chat about the characters rather than the actual books and there's only so much real discussion you can have on your own.:(

I've at least tried to keep my own choices fairly quirky and slipped a bit of literature in occasionally.

I am the coordinator, in U3A terms, although I was reluctant at first, having just retired from teaching mostly exam classes.

I tried getting everyone to take turns in leading the discussion, but they all admitted it was better if I did it, being used to making kids focus.

I loved these books! Didn't she have a hamster?

Just finished 'Me After You' by Lucie Brownlee that I got from the library. A true story of the author's life after her husband died aged 37. Glad I didn't read it when I was in similar circumstances a few years ago, not sure I would have gone on!

I love the St Mary's books I've got them all and they are ones I reread. I will have to go look at the Patrick Rothfuss and Stephanie plum books now as well. Thanks for all these recommendations, I got the wolves one as its free on kindle just now so will hopefully be starting that soon...sorry I can't remember who recommended it.

  • It's a very long time since I joined in a thread on here! I sense I'm going to be checking this one a lot so I thought I'd make myself known instead of just lurking.

In recent years I'd have called myself a "lapsed reader". As a child, my nose was never out of a book and that interest continued until I began to struggle due to suffering eye strain, then finding it difficult to physically hold books because of tendonitis. Then DH bought me a Kindle and that sorted out my problems.

I'll read all sorts, depending on my mood, though it's almost always fiction. I'm another one to make use of the Kindle Daily Deals and that has led me to try things that I might not have considered otherwise.

I'm on my second book of the year. The first was Kate Morton's "The Lake House", which I largely enjoyed apart from the disappointingly weak "final reveal". I'm now on an old Ken Follett - Whiteout - which is rattling along very nicely indeed.
