Have you read "The Robber Bride"?
I have, but a long time ago and have forgotten it. When I cleared some double stacked bookshelves I came across a number of goodies. Trying to be disciplined and part with them.
It's hard!
Reading A God In Ruins by Kate Atkinson at the moment. It's Teddy from Life After Life but not as good and there's a pretentious feel to it.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I have just finished reading Deafening by Frances Itani
It was a very absorbing read for me. the 2 main characters are very well rounded and I really cared about what was happening with both of them. Grania and Jim fall in love and get married, but their love is interrupted by Jim going off to fight in the 1st World War. Grania is deaf and you get a real insight into the challenges that deaf children and adults have to face in the hearing world and Jim is very graphic about the realities of War.0 -
Really enjoying this thread
It's not a genre I've previously read but having watched The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead/Z Nation I've been reading zombie books
I didn't finish World War Z by Max Brooks - didn't enjoy it.
I really enjoyed The Return Man by V M Zito. I'm hoping for a sequel
Currently reading and enjoying Postive (Zombies. Road pirates. Death cults. He had no choice but to build a new world) by David Wellington. He's written other zombie books so I'll be looking for them when I finish Positive.
Does anyone else read zombie books and can recommend any books/authors? Thank you0 -

'The Girl with All the Gifts' by M.R Carey - it's really, really good.
If you don't mind some YA fiction then you could try 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' by Carrie Ryan. I read the first in the series and thought it wasn't bad, and I think they're making it into a film too.
Edited to add - I just thought of another'The Reapers are the Angels' by Alden Bell. I thought it was quite good, it reminded me of 'The Passage' by Justin Cronin.

Neville Shute's 'The Pied Piper' is very good, though it's years since I read it. Another author I like is Scarlett Thomas, also Gillian White whose books are quite dark; my favourite is 'Veil of Darkness'.0

I was thinking earlier about two old authors, about whom we hardly ever hear now; Neville Shute and Nicholas Monserrat.
I was reading the part where the plane ditches in the sea and it reminded me of 'The Sea Shall Not Have Them' and 'The Cruel Sea'
Shute and Monserrat wrote some brilliant books.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

'I'm just about to start on Jessie Burton's The Miniaturist which a friend passed on after she read it at her book group. Apparently it received very mixed reviews from the other members so I'm not holding my breath that I'll enjoy it. I expect a lot of you have read it so comments would be welcome please.'
I would stay give this a go - it has a good twist towards the end, and is set in an unusual time and country - I enjoyed it.
Thanks for all the recs for sci-fi. I read most genres (except chick-lit) but particularly love sci-fi and fantasy
I would also recommend Station Eleven and The Girl With All the Gifts0
