This is not a long book, and this evening I have read upto p56 out of 210. it has made me incredibly cross because it is such a waste of time. I think this is the first book I have decided not to bother reading until the end because it is utter rubbish. If I'm honest, I didn't get much out of The Alchemist either. The author is a 100% certifiable nutjob! How does he become published in 26 countries? Must be magic....

    Onto the next.

I couldn't get on with The Alchemist either, which drove me crazy as OH and my best friend (who gave it to me) rave about it :rotfl:

I've just finished The Bookseller of Kabul, which was fab, insightful, yet reasonably depressing(!) I'm now reading The Taming of the Wife by Philippa Gregory, and considering reading her whole Tudor Court series.

You might enjoy this one, then. A completely different style, but not a heavy read that describes the reality of life in Afghanistan through a western woman's eyes.

I always start reading these threads with anticipation and then find, as in the bookgroup I belong to IRL that there are just so many books in this world that I haven't the slightest interest in reading.

I know what you mean ,in my signature you will see

    Quot Libra,Quam Breve Tempus ,
    roughly translates as

'So many books ,so little time'

But I love to see what other people read and maybe get an idea for when I go to the library I am a great believer of use it or lose it and I go to one of the smaller satellite libraries instead of my nearest which is a large one and unlikely to close

One of the things that I feel more liberated about is not reading books. I actually read alot but when I was younger I felt that if I started a book I had to finish it. Now I am older I might start reading a book and after a while I think, "I couldn't care less what happens." so I stop reading.

For me it will be a resource to dip in to. See what OS peeps are finding interesting

I used to look at the best seller list to reserve at the library. It worked well until 50 shades. What utter rot in my opinion. I haven't used that as a resource since and my reading definitely has waned.

Good thread V as I have a few titles I already like the look of. Much appreciated to contributors in advance. :)
  • May I join in? I love reading in the last 2 months I've got through Robert Harris' Cicero trilogy, which I found hard to put down. I started reading them after going to see him at the Manchester lit festival having previously read 'Pompeii' and 'An Officer and a Spy', both of which I would recommend.
The book I read in December was 'Lamentation' by C.J. Sansom. I love this series with the hunchback lawyer, Shardlake and can't wait for the next one.
On the top of the pile to be read next is 'The Bone Clocks' - so that's January sorted for me.

    Great idea for a thread!

On the DFW board there is a thread 'no more buying books until I've read the ones I've got'.

I did try that thread, but it didn't work for me. I like to buy books on the Kindle Daily Deal at 99p, and when a book I want to read comes up as a deal, I'll go ahead and buy it. There's no way I want to miss a chance to buy a book at a lower price, just because I've got to read a book that I already have!

However, I've been doing my own little version of the challenge- to end the year with less kindle books waiting to be read than at the start of the year

At the start of 2015 I had 40 books waiting to be read.

At the end I had 33, so that was a win. I hope to reduce the figure this year too.

I average about a book a week. Last year I read 55 books. A few years ago, I used to read about two books a week.

But, I discovered MSE at about the same time I started doing jigsaws, so my reading levels dropped.

But, for various reasons I intend to do less jigsaws this year, and I know I spend too much time on MSE, so I need to cut MSE time too. Hopefully, I'll read a bit more.

I read entirely for pleasure - I prefer fiction, and I don't like things that are too worthy, wordy or dense.

I think this thread will be great place to get ideas for reading, so I'll be joining in on a regular basis

My first book read for 2016

This is the first in the Obsidian Heart trilogy. It's a fantasy story set in London. It starts off with a normal, everyday sort of guy with a fairly ordinary life, but suddenly very unusual, supernatural things start happening. The book is told in the first person, so you only know what the protagonist knows - I liked this approach, as it makes you want to keep reading to see if you can find out more.

I'll certainly be reading the rest of this trilogy.

    Score 9/10

I'm a big Shardlake fan as well - These books are just about the only ones I'll buy at full Kindle price, rather than waiting for a deal.

Last year I read Enigma by Robert Harris, about the Bletchley Park code breakers, just a couple of weeks before I visited Bletchley myself, so it was a great way to prepare for my visit

  • Another fan of C.J. Sansom's "Shardlake" series. Now reading one of his stand alone books "Dominion" set in 1952 and imagining Hitler winning the war with Britain. Excellent book (just as well, it's 720 pages long).
Just finished the latest Cormoran Stryke book by Robert Galbraith (aka J.P. Rowling). Another really good read.
All my books come from chazzers or the library.
    Normal people worry me.
