I'll be following this thread with interest. Like the OP, we are looking to change our old scenic as its starting to cost us a lot of money. Our first thought was the Qashqai but after looking I'm not convinced they're big enough for us. We have 2 bulky car seats to think about and want a decent sized boot. We have sat in a Kuga and liked the size, the same with the Mazda CRV but I think the latter might be out if price range (around 10/11k). The car tax on the CX 5 is off putting and again, might be out of price range. We also looked at the Kia sportage which could be a contender.

We haven't looked at the yeti or the Hyundai ix35 so will add those to the list.

If the Qashqai was not big enough for you then it is very unlikely that the Sportage, ix35 or Yeti will be either. If you need bigger than this but budget is a constraint (in comparison to a CRV size SUV) then it might be worth looking in the MPV segment as there are some very good value vehicles that can compete with the CRV in terms of size. Also, you have to consider that at the £10-11k mark the larger compact SUVs/crossovers will most likely be 4x4 rather than 4x2 and unless you need that it really isn't worth the additional day to day cost.

How about a Ford C-Max? Or a Seat Alhambra?

Is the C-max the one that's bigger than an S-max? Whichever the biggest of the two is has now been added to my shortlist along with a Citroen Picasso C4.

As Walcott says above, i'm kind of moving away from the SUV style now and looking more at MPV's simply because you seem to get much more room for your money.

We did the test drives today. Well, 2 of them. The Yeti first which was very much as we expected....solid and seemed like decent value for money.

Next was our appointment with Honda to test the CRV...and the we cancelled out test drive of the Nissan Qashqai. We pick up our CRV (1.6 diesel, 2 WD, SE model) in 2 weeks.

I had a feeling that is what you might go for given that the CRV is bigger than the other two and with the 1.6 4x2 is now virtually giving crossover levels of efficiency.

My previous experience of CRVs has been the 2.0 petrol but I would definitely give the 1.6 diesel 4x2 serious consideration. Hope you enjoy it :)

Glad you found your car. We need to do some test drives soon, hopefully over the weekend.
  • Were it not for the recommendations and comments here, we may not have considered the CRV at all so a sincere thanks to all who took the time to comment
