So, he didn't say anything emotive like 'your children and kittens will DIE if you put that tyre on again', as previously suggested?
OMG, no he didn't say we would die - no not at all, sorry I didn't mean it to be read as that.
He said if my tyre place said it was 4mm and my dealer said its 1mm would I really want it on my car, cos he wouldn’t. I said well yes if it’s not illegal. I said if a tyre on my car now gets worn I can use that tyre instead of buying a new one and he said yes if you don’t care about the safety of your family. (I put that in bold as that was his exact words) I said 4mm is legal, he said maybe so but would I risk it as he wouldn't…… Hence my thread as to when people change. I didn't want to het into 'he said/she said' just really when do you change your tyres.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

He said yes I could put it back on but that he wouldn't. I was left thinking I'm the only one who wears my tyres down so low that I consider it 'normal' to put a 4mm tyre on my car.
Just getting other people's opinions as what they wear there's down too.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

Who said it?
Not a man from vosa as vosa don't exist anymore.0 -

I was given -
Vehicle & Operator Services Agency, Testing Station, Sandy Lane, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE3 5HB 01912364286
on a note from the dealer?
I just called that.
I'm wondering what the dealer gave me now......Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
looks like an MOT testing station to me.
No, that Sandy Lane centre was the old VOSA site.
OP - the point being made here is that VOSA does not exist any more, it has been replaced by DVSA.
You didn't speak to VOSA, but you may have spoken to DVSA. They took over the majority of VOSA's responsibilities.0 -
Not even the Emergency services change at 3mm.
LAS used to be 2mm.
But a colleague had to have a shouting match to get his fronts changed that had gone bald on the inside edge. It was on the old Astra that sat quite low, I pointed it out to him as he had parked on full left lock.
Not sure what legal power the MOT place where using in refusing the car to be removed from the premises.
If the car was clearly unfit to be on the road they should have stopped the test.
I would keep the offending tyre in the shed as evidence if Vosa required it.
The word of your garage several weeks earlier is unlikely to be much use.
But the tyre itself is irrefutable.
Even if they tyre was bald all you had to do is fit the spare or the temp space saver.
Or take the offending wheel to a local tyre shop on its own.
I change as the tyre approach the wear indicators.
Early if the tyre has uneven wear on the inside or outside. I like having at least 1.6mm of tread over the entire surface, not just visible tread and the centre section having 1.6mm.
And what would that achieve?
To stop you're usual whine about being stalked when your incorrect posts are corrected I've added a copy of the MOT manual.
Your recent incorrect advice hasn't added much to help others.0 -
The MOT limit is the same as the legal limit. Thank the tester nicely for saving you from three points and a fine.
That is a bare minimum. Especially in wet weather, braking distances increase dramatically before you get that low.0 -

I might be wrong but aren't they claiming 4mm of tread?0 -
It wasn't DVSA, it was VOSA?
How long ago did this happen?
The VOSA ceased to exist in March 2014.
The DVSA has been responsible for all MOT matters since April 2014.
I haven't a clue who you phoned in Newcastle - but it can't have been DVSA.
To contact the DVSA see here - phone an 0300 number or write to them in Wales.
