Hi, I am in full time employement and pay my tax by PAYE. I also have a seasonal job in a supermarket and pay tax by PAYE. In tax year 2006-07, the supermarket first started to tax me at 'BR' rate being my 2nd job but at some point they changed my tax code to 4T. so at the end of tax year, I informed tax office and got the underpaid tax sorted. But in tax year 2007/08, when underpaid tax was sorted, tax office changed my tax code to normal personal allowance for my 2nd job so I contacted when to get it changed to 'BR'. On completion of tax year 2007/08, in total i had 3 different tax codes for my 2nd job and my P60 for 2nd job says code 'BR'
Do i have to inform HMRC about ups and down in tax code for 2007/08 financial year?? Since 2008/09, my tax code for 2nd job has been 'BR'0 -
I use an online system, Kashflow, for my company which works extremely well and being a cloud based system they keep it updated and we pay an annual rent. What equivalent is there for Personal Tax that will keep track of my affairs and produce the relevant automated personal tax form to HRMC?0

I've received two different tax codes from HMRC over the past few months the current one being 655L. I've read they are in disarray and I'm not confident they know what they're doing.
My question is this:
I use my car quite frequently to carry out my duties for work. I drive between 400-500 miles per month using my own personal car as a casual user (although it really should be essential user). We get 54p for the first 1000 miles and 47p per mile there after. I fill in my expense form every month and claim this in the non taxable section. Can you explain if this should be taxable and would it affect my tax code and how?0 -
I am a teacher based in Edinburgh . Because of the job market I had to take a job in a different local authority almost 200 miles from my main residence. I called the Revenue and enquired about tax relief and was told that there was no provision for my situation. I thought that as my rent and council tax and extra utilities were an unavoidable extra cost on top of my main residence costs I could claim some relief for the 6 months that I was away from home . Can you advise?0

@Adoois: You should include the amounts paid for air travel in your business income and then deduct the amounts expended on the flights.
@valsad:If you were given a tax free allowance at your second job at some point through the year, it is possible you may have underpaid tax. I would sit tight and let HMRC chase you for it. As long as you now have code BR for your second job, you are fine.
@RDF: HMRC issues their own tax calculator when you sefl assess.
@The Jester: The tax free car allowance is 40p pm for the first 10,000 miles and then 25p pm. It looks from your post as if your employer is taxing the excess over this amount, in which case you are getting the correct tax releif and are paying tax correctly on the rest.
@gussy: There is no tax relief for travel to and from work, or for staying away from home, unless it is on employer's business, eg your employer sent you to a conference or similar.0 -
@gussy: We assume that you are in a master and servant relationship (you are the servant) and you have got yourself new employment with a new employer (master). In the old days when there really were masters and servants, Wackford Squeers, would have provided you with accommodation at, Dotheboys Hall.
If you were self employed, temporarily re assigned to another place of work or commuting 200 miles the other way to Germany, other rules might apply.0 -
I'm in the army and am posted to somewhere barracks (2year "permanent" posting). I was asked to volunteer to go on loan for up to a year (been 5months so far) to somewhere-else barracks which is a similar distance away. I get "Home to Duty travel" pay of about 26p/mile for every mile over 9miles each way. Can I claim tax relief (up to 40p IIRC) on this as it's a temporary job?0

Hi Tony. Do you know of any plans the government may have to tax lump sums derived from occupational pensions in the future. My wife works for the NHS and is contemplating early retirement even though she has a considerable shortfall in her years of contributions as she is convinced this is going to happen.0

I am still waiting for my tax refund for the year 2009-2010, I originally phoned my tax office in May 2010 to say that I was owed a tax refund in the region of £800. After writing and phoning on many occasions, I still have not received my refund, what else can I do?0

My mother, a pensioner, has received a P800 tax notice indicating an underpayment of tax over 2 years.
I can confirm that the income amounts on the fnancial year 2009/10 are correct but have still to confirm the amounts on the 2008/09 year.
She gets a state pension every week, a private widows pension every month and she works part time. She has paid tax on this private widows pension.
Although she does work part time, she only earns approx £45 per week but this income goes towards her total taxable income. What i have noticed is though, that she has standard tax code of 647L on her works P60 and a code of 121P on her private widows pension.
Does anyone know if this is correct? I think the underpayment has come from her earnings in her job cos she hasn't paid tax but if the code her work has doesn't allow them to deduct tax how on earth can she pay tax on these earnings? Surely, the tax office should have informed her employer of her tax code as the pension provider has the correct code. Also, if this notice stands how will they want the tax back?
Any advice greatly appreciated. thanks0
