  • Hi, thanks for offering us your expertise.

This is the first time that I've had to fill in a form and I've got a little confused. I feel a bit stupid needing help, given that my taxable income is around the £350 - it all seems hardly worth the trouble but I still want to get it right.

I have been doing a small amount of mystery shopping for several(5) different companies. Mostly, they employ me as self-employed, but
1 (or maybe 2) have treated me as a 'standard' employee and have sent me P60 (1 has taken tax)
1 sends me email payslips and
    2 don't send anything.
I also very briefly worked one day a week in a coffee shop but she didn't keep me after my trial. She didn't take my NI number and I don't think even my address, I was paid in cash with no documentation.

    I have 3 questions:
1 I don't have any pink employed supplement forms but I assume that I will need to complete one for each of the (3) 'employed' jobs. (Presumably, these will be available on-line even if I don't have paper copies)
    Found on-line and completed.
Coffee shop wasn't on PAYE so goes in Box 13.1

2 I don't have a business name so do I just put my name and my home address?
    Apparently this is so!

3 On my spreadsheet, I treated all the money paid to me as income (both fee and amount allowed for purchases) and deducted 40p/mile petrol allowance and expenses/purchases from this total - I think this is OK, isn't it.
    Yes
Also discovered that I can offset mileage (difference between 40p and what they paid, for me 22p) from my employed posts.
    Thanks again.

Editied - I've found the answers!
By the way, I've had a nightmare getting on-line and problems with passwords (get it wrong 3 times and it blocks your access for an hour or 2) but once I got going it was really straight forward.

  • Hi Tony

Hope I am not to late! My husband is a self-employed builder (kitchens & bathrooms mainly), but last year we bought and sold a flat to try and make some money. I think our total profit is about £9k, please could you advise me how we fill this out on his tax return please. By the way the flat was in both our names.

    Many thanks

I seem to have done something very foolish. In my anxiety to do the right thing I told the tax man that I was starting self employment from 1st April, as I was being made redundant from 31st March and didn't want a gap between the two. I then went on holiday and didn't actually start trading till late April. Now they sent me a tax return for last year as I was technically self employed for 4 days. I didn't earn anything last year apart from my job, so do i only need to fill in the details from my P60? Or do I have to do the whole form?
It isn't that difficult to file SA online, it does all the work for you. Otherwise you'd have to write HMRC to clear up the start date of your self employment which is just a hassle. Sorry for jumping in but that's what I would do
  • Hi,
I registered as self employed sole trader in July, have only earnt around £100 since it is a second income for myself as i also am employed full time. Do they send me a tax return form to complete or how do i go about getting one? I am booked onto the course for learning what to do with IR issues but this course is not until 14 Sept by then it will be virtually time to submit my assessment?
    Many Thanks
    Rebecca

  • Hi Tony

I have a Limited Company and for one week each year I take on a couple of extra staff to help me out due to increased work. I recall when I first set up the Company I had a meeting with HMRC and there was mention that if I employed someone for less than 7 days in a year then there was no tax or National Insurance implications. Can you advise whether this is correct or not please?
  • When we (partner & I) moved we couldnt sell our old house so changed to a joint buy to let mortgage and rented it out. Despite having about 40% equity in it, the rent we receive only just covers the mortgage interest and agent costs. With the insurance costs, repairs and fees for new tenancies we have really been running at a small loss. However that's OK as we want to hold on to it for the long term hoping eventually to see its value increase to where we can sell and pay off our home mortgage. My old accountant advised that I neednt include it on my self assessment (I am self employed) as it is loss making. Is this correct?

  • Following the forthcoming withdrawal of the 10% Tax rate, I will have to pay
£152.82p more in tax based on my present income.

As I earn only £10,964/year, this is a large extra tax burden, as I already pay £991.68/annum in tax.

I retired early and am nearing 57 years old and receiving an Armed Forces Pension and a very small Annuity, on which I manage. BUT come April 2008, I will have this extra tax to pay.

I receive no benefits and have never had any.

This is unfair on people earning under £14500/year.

Why did the then Chancellor treat low earners in this way?
